From start to finish, this article nails the commonplace experience of Black women in the workplace with such jarring specificity that it will make you cry. So, accept this as a TW for Black women presently in an intentional space of protecting your peace. But, if you want to feel seen and reassured that you are not alone, read it, even if you have to do so bit by bit. Most importantly, for those who manage or work alongside Black women, read this article in its entirety, revisit it from time to time and interrogate your thinking. I implore you to ask yourself, how the contents of the article changes you convictionally, psychologically, and behaviorally. And, don’t stop there, but govern yourself accordingly.

The parallels between Black women and Elphaba… These connections are deeply personal and cultural. When I watched 𝘞𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥, I cried for so many reasons—the breathtaking talent, the deep messages, the fashion, fantasy and the undeniable truths. But mostly, I cried because 𝘌𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘢 was 𝘮𝘦. The little Black girl with “freaky green eyes” and freckles as well as the woman I am today. She echoes the essence of a sista. My tears— the weight of ongoing trauma. The simple yet radical desire to be seen, supported, and safe. Here are the 10 mind-blowing parallels: 1. Judged constantly because of the color of your skin—weaponized hues of Black. 2. Told to be seen and not heard. 3. Asked to show compassion, support, and “play the game” for those who don’t care about you. 4. Expected to conform and dim your Black girl magic. 5. Entrusting your vulnerabilities to others, especially White women, only to be betrayed when they choose convenience over justice. 6. Fighting for the greater good, yet being misunderstood, vilified, and labeled “evil.” 7. Believing in an ally, only to be betrayed for their personal gain at the expense of the collective. 8. Criticized for being “too independent”— inside and outside the culture, yet left manage alone. 9. Having your leadership and contributions exploited, overlooked or claimed by others. 10. Labeled as “too much,” “intimidating,” or “angry” when your ambition, intelligence, and defiance of societal norms are actually seen as threatening. 11. Bonus: Thriving despite systemic opposition and excelling in spaces not designed for our success. Today, I’m going to see 𝘞𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 again. P.S. If you’re a Black woman, go see it. This article and the research referenced raises critical points. The only thing I would add Is the expectation of Black women doing care work in the workplace. It is well documented that this care work is critical to business success, yet black women are not rewarded for doing it, and others are not seen as less competent for not doing it.

Our judgment is constantly questioned despite the track records we build by working twice as hard to achieve as half as much. Great article, and much needed as DEI is under attack in many levels of business. From VCs, philanthropy, to small businesses, Black Women are rapidly being removed from leadership roles after speaking up for unethical behaviors in the workplace while in their positions of leadership. When will the workplace take into consideration incidous trauma, historical trauma, generational trauma, and the present day traumas to the Black Woman. The article gives some tips.
