I collaborated with two other members of the congregation to create a food shelf and financial assistance program to assist members of the church and local community. We sought donations from local businesses and community members to help put food on the table for those who were experiencing financial hardships. Through cash donations, we were able to assist with paying utility bills, and purchase gas gift cards to assist with getting to work, and sometimes just giving the help people needed…

🧩 Understanding Stimming: Supporting Neurodivergent Children and Teens 🧠💫 As a parent of a neurodivergent child or teen, you may have observed them engaging in repetitive sounds or motions, known as stimming. Stimming is a form of emotional self-regulation, helping individuals achieve comfort and focus in response to overstimulation, under-stimulation, or distress. Understanding stimming, its triggers, and when it indicates a need for extra support is crucial for parents. Who Is Likely to Stimm? Stimming behaviors are not exclusive to neurodivergent individuals. Many neurotypical people engage in stim-adjacent behaviors, albeit typically ceasing once noticed. However, for autistic or neurodivergent individuals, social cues may not prompt them to stop. Stimming behaviors, often less socially acceptable, may persist despite external feedback. What Triggers Stimming? Identifying triggers for your child's stimming can aid in creating a comfortable environment and mitigating potentially harmful behaviors. Changes in the environment, excitement, big emotions, concerns, and complex emotions can all serve as stimming triggers. Keeping a journal of stimming behaviors can help pinpoint specific triggers for your child. Types of Stimming Behaviors Stimming can manifest in various forms, including physical motions, gestures, or repetitive noises. These behaviors are classified into auditory, tactile, visual, vestibular, and olfactory categories. Common stimming behaviors include rocking, pacing, snapping fingers, humming, tapping objects, and flapping hands. When Is Stimming Harmful? While most stimming behaviors are physically harmless, some may lead to injury if repeated over time. Additionally, stimming may become problematic if it disrupts school or home life, causes social isolation, public disturbances, or emotional distress. When a child is distressed by their stimming, it's essential to address the behavior and explore alternative coping mechanisms with the guidance of a therapist or doctor. Supporting Neurodivergent Children Understanding and supporting stimming behaviors is vital for creating a nurturing environment for neurodivergent children and teens. By identifying triggers, promoting alternative coping strategies, and seeking professional guidance when necessary, parents can help their children navigate stimming in a healthy and constructive manner.
