Big rounds are cool. Proven models are cooler. ^This^ is perhaps my main takeaway of the past ten years in the startup world. As others have mentioned, TechCrunch headlines can be the thief of joy. ‘Why can’t we raise a round like that?’ ‘What have they got that we don’t?’ But more and more, I don’t care about the headlines. A big round isn’t an indicator of: 1. Long-term sustainability  2. Market fit It’s simply evidence that a founder and a VC built a relationship. Which is cool… but definitely not everything. Take Synapse: $33m raised to huge acclaim… and five years later they’re toast. Doesn’t mean there weren’t very talented people on the inside. But does mean that headline was nothing to get excited about in and of itself ✌️

One of 3 tech events that was the highlight of my cool summer week here in the Bay..have your own valuation rather than waiting for VC to value you. I usually advise startup to join YC when they have potential but not sure what to do. Will it worth your 7%? Well most of the time yes. Met an engineer that interested in replacing business research with AI when I mentioned about research based thesis writing for students and promised to get back to him, I found in my note that the startup I meant Scribbr is a decade old YC grad that finally got his break after M&A and AI last year..  What's your worth, your timeline and goal, you will have to decide and find it yourself ..only then this startup panel in legal and finance can help you to leverage it!

I’m rethinking my stance of solo vs multiple co-founders. It’s mostly true that together you go further. And alone you move faster. But that’s assuming that you all are equally important and aligned. Because sometimes together you move slower and thus never reach further. Especially in the age of AI, where some tools can replace a whole function or a role. Similar to what Sam Altman and Amjad Masad talk about, single founder unicorn potential. So it could be that instead of a 33.33% split between three co-founders and spending so much time looking for co-founders. we would have a scenario with the main founder owning 33% and the next 5 founding team members who join later each owning 12%. Regardless of when they joined. I’m sure we’ll see more of that model in the future. And honestly it could work better in certain cases. It depends on the business, product, market and the founder.

After 10 years of running datarockets  and speaking to hundreds of founders I’ve started experiencing what I call the ‘doctor syndrome’. When I talk to a new founder about their startup, I can already see potential causes for that startup’s death. - Wanting to build a product that does everything and not focusing on a single problem for your core customers - Not validating the product vision but pushing forward and spending months building something your customers might not even want when it’s ready - Over-indexing product features over distribution - building great products is no longer the main challenge, it’s finding your core set of customers It can be hard to muster up motivation when first time founders insist on walking down these paths, but everyday we fight the good fight.
