As a new College of European Commissioners is formed, the European Parliament plays a crucial role in questioning the Commissioners-designate on their programme and ambitions. On Tuesday 5 November, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) holds the hearing of Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner-designate for Startups, #Research and #Innovation, during which many key topics for European universities will be discussed. Hot off the Financial Times! 📰 In today's Financial Times column our Ilkka Kivimäki states that Europe has everything it takes to become Silicon Valley 2.0. but in order to do that, certain areas of Europe’s tech and research ecosystems can’t be overlooked. "Replicating the success of European spinouts such as IQM Quantum Computers, biomodal and Climeworks requires stronger alignment and appreciation for the fact that research-based startups are often best positioned to help universities realise the societal impact of their research. Only few European universities consider spinouts as an important strategic asset and actively track their progress as a part of the university's overall success, and this needs to change." It is great to see the stats from what we have been feeling and living for the past 15 years in #Switzerland 🇨🇭 "ETH Zürich is the university with the highest number of startups with academic patent applications at the European Patent Office, 2000–2020! " ❕ Note: This doesn’t even include the many innovations we choose not to patent, as software, networking, and AI patents are difficult to defend and easy to create derivatives from. This is especially true for start-ups like LogicStar AI, LatticeFlow AI, NetFabric.ai, Invariant Labs, DeepCode (The Software Revolution) by Snyk.io and Snyk to name a few.
