Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally!    This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year.   💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem.   We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Our conclusion: more and more funding are being mobilised for ♻️ #Greentech business ideas that are based on AI-based technologies and have a positive impact on our planet. Very nuanced, deep and well thought-through article on the use/assistance of #genai in #softwareengineering by Alexander Pretschner on the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung this morning. Key message: it needs (now & in the future) human insight to perform the many decisions involved in going from user needs to requirements to code. This in turn means that the education of software engineers doesn’t need to change much: in order to judge modelling and design decisions in software development, the young engineer needs to be able to do it. Otherwise he or she cannot prompt. Only then, prompting and AI-assisted programming should be taught and used. Alexander Pretschner hypothesizes that these ideas transfer also to other domains. The best part of work is always at the terminals. Yesterday at the HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG Container Terminal Tollerort. Supporting the incredible works of founders Marcel Wiegand and Nico Marks and their exciting venture passify that secures and automates gate processes. The roll-out was a blast. Speaking with hundreds of truck drivers all day long and showing them the easiness of the gate process via smartphone App. This is another great example why founders who have years of terminal work experiences make the difference when it comes to gate integration, process knowledge and smooth software roll-outs. And this is just the start. passify simplifies and streamlines the access management process for both truck drivers and facility operators, while providing real-time information on pick-up and delivery availability. "Mut statt Angst" was the inofficial motto of the CONTACT Software #OpenWorld24 conference. I liked the positive vibes and enjoyed some key takeaways regarding the current state of AI in engineering: We need strong leadership to succeed: Nor more "analysis, analysis, paralysis" as Dr. Siegmar Haasis elegantly put it. We need technologically apt leadership that helps to set clear goals for implementing AI assistants and to avoid ending up in the PoC trap. We need better education around the technology: Many people still don't know that implementing an industrial AI assistant normally does not require model training. It is important to understand the basics of #RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) in order to create good entry-level use cases. We can get started today: Feasibility studies for many use cases can be run in days and implementing a solution that already serves real user needs only takes weeks. There is no excuse not to start right now! Michael Treskow from Eight Roads Ventures said recently on #startupland powered by deutsche-startups.de that we're already playing in the big leagues. But are we? Let's dive into some numbers. Germany's venture capital scene is booming, but how do we compare globally? 1. In 2022, Germany attracted €11.3 billion in VC investments. Impressive, right? 2. Yet, the US still leads with €150 billion. The gap is significant. 3. But here's a twist: Germany is closing the distance fast. Growth rates are higher than many expect. So, what's behind this momentum? → A strong startup ecosystem that fosters innovation. → Government initiatives supporting tech ventures. → A cultural shift towards embracing entrepreneurship. I have recently had multiple discussions within my network involving startups and investors who are eager to gain a better understanding of the hospital and practice software market in Germany. This post should be a good starting point to understand the key players and the key dynamics. I wrote down a few additional thoughts. 1️⃣ 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬' 𝐄𝐇𝐑/𝐄𝐌𝐑 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 In Germany, patient portals are being implemented, enabled by the "future hospital act". These patient portals are building patient pathways on top of EHR/EMR, capturing most of the value in the new digital value chain. The 15 BG clinics are implementing a "vendor-neutral, API-first interoperability layer" on top of their EHR/EMR systems and MedTech devices, effectively reducing EHR/EMR to the role of mere back-office databases. 2️⃣ 𝐈𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐌𝐕𝐙 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 Medical Care Centers (MVZ) are independent facilities where multiple outpatient doctors collaboratively work under one roof, often owned or financed by private investors. In 2020, Medical Care Centers (MVZs) accounted for 15% of ambulatory care practices in Germany. If current trends persist, MVZs are projected to represent 33% of all ambulatory care practices in Germany. This represents a significant portion of the market. MVZs are organized into an association. There is a scenario in which they could choose to promote a specific practice software in the market, or even develop or customize their own. This would structurally change the landscape of practice software in Germany. 3️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲... Traditional PE players are looking at a "buy & build" scenario for the practice software market in outpatient care. VCs have invested in new players such as Doctorly (cloud-based practice software), Eterno (co-working space for HCPs with its own Tech stack) and Doctolib (the #1 HealthTech in Europe bringing its own practice software early 2025). Corporate investors, like Mehiläinen, a leading Finish health system, has already acquired 50+ practices in Germany in the last months and is rolling out its own Tech Tech. 4️⃣ ... 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 The current German Health Minister has labeled external investors in healthcare as "locusts" and wants to stop the rising trend of Medical Care Centers (MVZs). Policymakers are exerting significant pressure on both hospital EHR/EMR systems and practice software in outpatient care to adopt the "open" FHIR standard.
