Reunite 🤗 - Connect 🫱🏼🫲🏽 - Innovate💡 BIPAsia is like an annual “reunion” for the IP industry in Hong Kong, and this year was no exception. It was wonderful reconnecting with old friends, including many Eagle IP Limited alumni. What made this year extra special was meeting so many first-time attendees who flew in from across the globe 🌎 —Europe, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Africa, Mainland China, and more. We had a strong showing from our neighboring city #Shenzhen. Needless to say, my Mandarin (and even Cantonese!) got a real workout over these two days. 😅 It was an absolute pleasure to host our booth alongside my fellow Principals, Yolanda Wang and Pauli Wong during an intense but rewarding conference. Being next to Entrepreneur Day added even more excitement, as we got a glimpse of the cool innovations arising from Hong Kong. Our principal, Ms. Pauli Wong, delivered a talk titled “Bright Ideas, Strong Barriers: A Patenting Masterclass” to members of the Hong Kong Christian last Thursday. The audience valued the talk and asked thoughtful questions. Pauli was impressed by HKCS’s innovative drive to provide holistic quality services to the society. She enjoyed presenting and was happy to share her insights and experiences with everyone. Talk for HKUST Entrepreneurship 101 Training Program Our principal, Ms. Pauli Wong, was invited by HKUST to speak at their Entrepreneurship 101 Training Program on the topic of protecting start-ups through intellectual property. Her talk, titled "Patent 101 for Entrepreneurs and Start-Ups," covered the fundamentals of IP, with a particular focus on patents. She highlighted often-overlooked aspects and shared invaluable tips to help start-up entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls.   Pauli really enjoyed giving the talk and felt inspired by the positive feedback from the audience. She found it rewarding to share her knowledge about intellectual property and its importance for entrepreneurs. What an honor to attend this black tie event last month to honor some key contributors from the CUHK community at the Gerald Choa Oration 2024 “Not Good Enough” was the title of Dr. Francis Chan‘s honest and inspiring sharing about the challenges he faced growing up and how learning to forge ahead in the face of naysayers brought him to where he is today. He continues to dream big and step into new “frontiers” where no one has gone before. He shared some of the very cool results from his current work w/ Dr. Siew Ng & the whole R&D team showing how altering the gut microbiome can have a profound effect on health outcomes in so many different ways. So honored and thankful to have an opportunity to celebrate with Dr. Francis Chan, Dr. Czarina Leung and Dr. Wing Yan Kwong as well as hear short messages from the Honourable LEUNG Chun Ying (former Chief Executive of HKSAR), and New Dean Dr. Philip Chiu (new Dean of faculty of medicine., CUHK). Finally, such a pleasure to meet & chat with current CUHK medical students and hear about their passion for medicine. These young people are our future! Love their joyful attitude & energy. Part of me is amazed at how connections made early in my career (as a patent agent at Vertex Pharmaceuticals) can still be re-made and strengthened now, after almost 20 years! Love this small but mighty community of patent practitioners. We’re all facing this interesting brave new (fast changing) world with sophisticated AI tools, increasingly complex global issues, and the big open question of how the laws (and we!) will be able manage it all. Fascinating discussions, great content, and very meaningful connections. I’ve certainly come away inspired with many ideas for new things I want to try. Also met many people with whom I hope to have opportunities to collaborate. I love opening people’s eyes to the wild and complex 🌎 world of IP strategy, especially when navigating in such an international place such as Hong Kong. 🇭🇰 I had the honor of partnering with the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department to give a level “202” talk on patent issues. Other speakers in this 202 series include Michael Lin (IIPCC), Dr. David Ai (London School of Economics and Political Science), and Dr. Vincent Z. (IP licensing expert). I think it’s great that HKIPD is taking the initiative to offer these higher level IP courses to the public. It’s so important for innovators to understand these types of business-oriented IP concepts, such as IP ownership, transfer, licensing, management, commercialization, enforcement, and more. Thrilled that over 100 ppl registered for this event. Last week, Ms. Jennifer Che, our President and Managing Director, spoke at the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department's IP Training Programme on patent commercialization and technology transfer. Since 2020, the IPD has partnered with the Vocational Training Council’ s Institute of Professional Education and Knowledge to arrange various IP training programmes. Other speakers include Mr. Michael Lin – a strategic business consultant & President of IIPCC, Dr. David Ai from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Dr. Vincent Z., an expert in IP licensing and technology transfer who worked at Netac Technology Co., Ltd.   Jennifer’s talk, titled 'Building a Strategic Patent Portfolio for Commercialization,' taught professionals how to strategically build patent portfolios with a business mindset. Aside from building IP, Jennifer also focused on topics such as IP licensing, ownership transfers, enforcement, and cross-border issues.    Attendees, including IP owners and executives from startups, SMEs, and large enterprises in the innovation sector, found her talk incredibly insightful and beneficial.
