As we mark World Mental Health Day today, October 10th, I find myself reflecting on the complex journey of grief - a path I'm walking personally and professionally. Grief can impact mental health in many ways including depression, anxiety, triggering PTSD, sleep disturbances and more. Grief isn't a linear process as I’ve written on CannabizMD and as we discussed in the webinar I hosted, “Treating Grief + Medical Cannabis” shortly after I lost my daughter this spring. I’ve studied grief for years as part of my healing from other significant personal losses and as part of my volunteer work in hospice and palliative care. Grief is more like a tumbleweed, unpredictable in its movements and appearances. As part of my own healing, I know that it wouldn’t hurt so much if there wasn’t so much love. As American writer and psychoanalysis researcher Judith Viorst wisely wrote, "We cannot deeply love anything without becoming vulnerable to loss." In my work at the intersection of cannabis science and policy, I've seen how cannabinoids can play a role in managing grief's multifaceted symptoms. The endocannabinoid system's influence on mood, sleep, and appetite makes cannabis a potential ally in navigating loss. But it's crucial to approach cannabis use thoughtfully: 🍃 Consult a trained cannabis clinician 🍃Start low, go slow 🍃Experiment mindfully with cultivars and delivery methods, i.e., inhalation and edibles 🍃 Journal your experiences with cannabis as a learning tool and journal period Remember, cannabis is just one tool. True healing comes from a holistic approach - professional support, self-reflection, and community connection. We need to recognize that as individuals, employers, colleagues, and for friends, the grief journey is valid and complex. I learned many years ago after the loss of my mom, the greatest cure for grief is action. At the same time, I’m mindful to make sure that I step back to “grief dose” as my grief counselor says. We need to feel our feelings and not bury them in work. On this World Mental Health Day, let's continue breaking stigmas and fostering understanding around mental health and the many paths to healing. Read my post on grief on CannabizMD and watch our webinar with cannabis clinicians and experts: https://lnkd.in/emu6bkRT. I began working on the webinar shortly after my loss so my feelings are very real and raw. My acute grief feelings are beginning to soften and becoming beautiful rather than painful. Lesson learned and reminding entrepreneurs in the industry … don’t make medical claims about cannabis. I know better than to title a webinar with “treating”, I should have used “managing” and because of that mistake made while working during my most acute grief, a bank’s compliance team kicked CannabizMD out. #worldmentalhealthday #griefawarenss #cannabisscience #cannabiseducation #mentalhealthmatters #cannabisbanking #socialentrepreneur

Today, on World Mental Health Day, it’s important to recognize the role we all play in supporting each other in every aspect of life, including the workplace. As Saidhbhe Cullen, our People and Culture Manager at Red River Archaeology Group, beautifully puts it: “Mental Health support, in any aspect of life, is as essential as food and water is for Humans to survive. In the workplace, it is integral to build that support for employees by investing in creating a safe environment. Fostering positive conversations across genders, generations and more, drive the importance of showing up for your colleagues, showcase compassion regularly and even respecting boundaries and self-care can make a difference. Mental Health is woven into every part of life, and we all have a responsibility to protect it.” One of Saidhbhe’s favourite quotes from Robert Frost resonates deeply today: “The only way out is through.” Let’s continue fostering these crucial conversations and ensuring that mental health is a priority for us all. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #SupportEachOther #CompassionInTheWorkplace
