Worth a listen/read: Airbnb’s Vlad Loktev on embracing chaos, inquiry over advocacy, poking the bear, and “impact, impact, impact” - https://lnkd.in/eFVRuNJJ I am a firm believer in the "humble inquiry" and "listen with the intent to understand, not respond" principles as key for being inclusive and getting your team involved and engaged as a product manager or product leader. It was encouraging to hear Vlad talk about how he also used and lived those principles while working with his team and stakeholders. There was another cool perspective on this approach to communication and understanding (either from a previous podcast episode or a different article): Approach the conversation with the initial belief that the other person / other people are right and let the questions and perspectives and understandings unfold from there. That doesn't mean that in the end you go with what they think or believe necessarily, but it helps you approach the different views with genuine curiosity and openness which in turn helps understand where each person's argument or opinion is coming from. As a bonus to taking this approach, your team also feels listened to and included in what you are all building in the end. Thanks Lenny Rachitsky for the cool guest and episode! #humbleinquiry #leadership #listentounderstand

🎯 Three powerful lessons I’ve learned from the latest episode on Lenny’s podcast, where Lenny interviewed Vlad, his former boss at Airbnb and now a partner at Index Ventures. 1️⃣ Work with People Who Truly Believe in What You’re Building Having a mission is crucial, but it’s even more vital to surround yourself with people who genuinely believe in the importance of what you’re trying to achieve. It doesn’t matter how talented or energetic your team is - if they don’t see why your goal is worth all the effort, it simply won’t work. There will always be challenges and imperfections along the way, but believing in the why behind the work drives people to push through obstacles. Throughout my career, I’ve seen that when people believe in the purpose of what they’re building, they can accomplish incredible things together. 2️⃣ Embracing Chaos for Innovation I’m naturally a perfectionist, and I like things to be organized and well thought out. But the discussion on how chaos can fuel innovation made much sense. At Airbnb, they sometimes design and ship products in just 24 hours, breaking all their usual processes. This chaos, while disruptive, often led to unexpected creativity and breakthroughs. It reminded me that sometimes, pushing the team to tackle the impossible can lead to surprisingly powerful results. Chaos isn’t something to fear. It’s something we should embrace from time to time. 3️⃣ Impact-Driven Leadership Waking up daily with a clear understanding of what will drive the most impact for your company is an art. There was much emphasis on focusing on the highest priorities, even when it meant saying no to other projects. Getting caught up in trying to do everything is easy, but the real key to success is being laser-focused on what truly matters. I’ve learned this the hard way, and I’ve seen how prioritizing impact over everything else not only drives company success but also makes work more fulfilling. The episode was a goldmine of insights, and if you’re interested in leadership and innovation or want to be inspired, I highly recommend listening to it. The insights from this < 2h podcast could be a strong foundation for a leadership course. Thank you Lenny Rachitsky, for always having interesting guests and a structured approach, and Vlad Loktev for sharing your experiences. Here are some takeaways, especially relevant for Q4: 1. Use psychological tools to help your mind, such as: ▫ Serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” ▫ Shit bucket: if something is not going well, write it down on paper, crumple it up and place it in the “shit bucket,” committing to let it go. 2. If there are too many priorities on a plate, it’s a sign of a lack of clarity on what’s important for the company. Focus on what truly matters and “burn the fires.” 3. Inquire vs advocating. Start with asking questions to fully understand others’ perspectives before advocating for yours. 4. Seek expert help in areas where you're learning or improving. Don’t be shy - “ask for the impossible, and sometimes you’ll be surprised by what you get.” 5. Don’t fear “poking the bear” by voicing your opinion, even if it challenges the status quo. Real change happens only by constructively addressing difficult issues. 6. Chaos can be a powerful tool to drive progress and help bring people together.
