The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. #fleetelectrification is in a conundrum. Many want #evs but will wait until the charging #infrastructure is in place. An excellent piece by John Voelcker. PHEVs are just another counter-productive half-measure from the "anything but EVs" crowd. I own a 2014 Prius Plug-in, which has a measly 11 miles or so of elecric range. I estimate that every time I plug it in, I save about 40 cents. I only bought it because it has a Li-ion battery instead of the NiMH battery in the regular Prius. BTW, this Prius will be my last Toyota, and my last gas-burning car. I'm buying a Hyundai Ioniq 5.

And it does require very thoughtful planning on the fleet operator to make this transition. Oakland Public Schools have gone 100% electric, with 74 shiny new electric busses. Even our local Caltrain commuter train has covered from diesel to electric. Changing routines fossilized for a 100 years, is not easy. But it's possible, and easier than ever given the technology insights included in today's modern solutions. EV sales are slumping, but we’re seeing a boom among fleets, a trend I’ve long predicted and one that could lay the groundwork for other sectors. Fleet-based operators are turning to EVs because these vehicles are perfectly suited for short and routine routes. (Think: school buses, mail trucks and garbage trucks). The vehicles charge overnight, go out during the day and return to their ports at night. Much like how you’d use and charge a cell phone. Ford is especially benefiting from this trend since the company sells more work trucks and vans in the U.S. than any other carmaker. While this sector grows, we’ll inevitably see more buy in from truck drivers, which could trickle down to other drivers too, and the infrastructure could continue to build around this. More public charging means less range anxiety. A report on state government- and utility-driven initiatives affecting electric vehicles (including hybrids) shows the majority of such efforts continue to focus on rebates and incentives for consumers and commercial fleet operators to acquire them. However, regulations and actions to modify electricity rates relating to EVs and develop charging infrastructure are also moving forward. The Q2 2024 edition of “50 States of Electric Vehicles” published by the NC Clean Energy Technology Center (NCCETC) at North Carolina State University said a total of 561 EV actions were taken during the timeline of the report. In 2024, as of early August, 29 states have enacted legislation related to transportation electrification. Massachusetts, New York, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Minnesota, Michigan and Hawaii were the most active in this regard, the report said. Stellantis to invest in EV infrastructure. Stellantis finally reached an agreement with California’s state regulators to follow its carbon goals regardless of US federal policies. In practical terms, this means: - Zero emission for light vehicles by 2030 - A $10 million investment in public charging infrastructure, - And participation in a car sharing initiative by the state.
