This study (https://lnkd.in/gbJMEuXF) provides more accurate predictions for the mitigation amounts and the effects on cow performance when using supplemental fatty acids to mitigate enteric methane emissions from lactating dairy cows. The important highlights are: ✅ Adding medium-chain (MCFA), mono-unsaturated (MUFA), or poly-unsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids (FA) to the diets of lactating dairy cows can moderately (between 3.77 and 9.21%) reduce daily enteric methane emissions (g/d). ✅ The importance of determining basal dietary levels of these fatty acids since the mitigation effects of supplemental MCFA, MUFA, and PUFA on daily methane (g/d) increased with greater basal dietary levels of each FA type. ✅ Also, rumen-degradable starch above 18% of diet DM promoted greater mitigation of methane yield (per unit of dry matter consumed) and intensity (per unit of energy-corrected milk produced) with supplemental PUFA. ✅ The results also suggests that more opportunities exist to reduce daily methane emissions with PUFA supplementation in early than late lactation cows. ✅ Finally, since methane mitigation with supplemental FA can reduce milk yield and composition, dairy cow nutritionists need to assess it on each farm based on available feed ingredients, total FA dietary levels, diet costs, and expected performance impacts. Dairy farmers and their cooperatives face an important vote on milk pricing before the end of the year. USDA recently proposed the most important changes in two decades to how minimum milk prices will be set under Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMOs). These changes will affect milk prices and dairy farm profitability for years to come. Dairy farmers and their cooperatives will vote on whether to accept the proposed changes once they are finalized in November or to eliminate pricing under FMMOs in their region altogether—there’s no option to continue with the pricing arrangements we have now. Do you know what the most effective ways to reach and influence farmers are? Do traditional ads do the trick, or is there more to the story? To find the answers, we conducted a comprehensive survey with hundreds of U.S. farmers, evaluating their responses to 66 different corn and soybean herbicides, and compiled over 21,000 data points. We analyzed how farmers interact with brands via retailer discussions, direct engagements with manufacturer reps, and their recall of advertising. What did we find? Only 3% of farmers were swayed to choose a brand by traditional advertising alone. On their own, retailer discussions are quite effective, achieving a 26% success rate even without any backing from the manufacturer. Impressively, when retailer discussions were paired with the recall of traditional media ads and direct manufacturer contact, the success rate was raised to 49%. Relying solely on advertising isn’t sufficient; without the support of an ag retailer, it falls flat.
