PUBLIC HEALTH SOLUTIONS RECEIVES $152 MILLION TO EXPAND ITS WHOLEYOUNYC NETWORK, WHICH WILL PROVIDE FACILITATED AND EASIER ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL COMMUNITY RESOURCES FOR NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOODS The grant will ensure the delivery of social services to improve health outcomes for Medicaid members in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan New York, NY (August 7, 2024) Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a $152 million grant to Public Health Solutions (PHS) from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) under the Medicaid 1115 Health Equity Reform Initiative (Social Care Networks). This investment will enable the expansion of WholeYouNYC (WYNYC), our community-based resource network, providing Medicaid members in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan with access to essential community resources. “Every year, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers avoid healthcare due to concerns about money, housing, food, transportation, and other unmet needs,” said Zachariah Hennessey, Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer at PHS. “Through New York State’s Health Equity Reform initiative, we have a once in a generation opportunity to change this trajectory and ensure Medicaid beneficiaries receive the resources they need on time to achieve optimal health for themselves and their families.” The award underscores the need for coordinated, technology-enabled access to New York City’s social safety net and represents a crucial step in building the public health infrastructure of the future. Public Health Solutions recognizes that equitable access is fundamental to achieving better healthcare outcomes and improving overall quality of life. Since 2018, WholeYouNYC has made a remarkable impact through its extensive network of 500+ community-based partners, which offer more than 800 services. Placing people at the center of care, the network has served over 16,000 participants, made 24,000 referrals, and saved upwards of $2.8 million in healthcare costs through its food and nutrition resources alone. By reducing gaps and preventing health crises before they occur, WholeYouNYC is transforming healthcare for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. Over the next three years, this funding will enable WholeYouNYC to further connect New Yorkers with essential resources such as food, transportation, employment support, health insurance, housing, and healthcare services. Our aim is to build regional infrastructure and community-based partnerships that will best serve Medicaid members and other underserved communities. Securing additional funding from government entities, donors, corporations, and philanthropists will be essential to ensuring the network’s accessibility and long-term sustainability for all New Yorkers.

In the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Pathways, Andrew Pecora, MD, and colleagues, provide insights and perspective from each constituent involved in shaping health care payment and delivery throughout the US. "Self-imposed problems have tied the health care industry into knots with no clear path to untie them. We cannot change laws restricting innovation if we ask patients and physi­cians to reduce total cost of care without proper support and appropriate incentives for clinicians and other care providers to ensure achievement of the highest quality clinical outcomes," said the authors. Prateek Sharma, MD, FASGE, ASGE President-elect and Chair of the AI Task Force, met with U.S. Representative Ami Bera, MD (CA-6th) to discuss ASGE priorities related to AI in Healthcare. Rep. Bera, cofounder of the Health Care Innovation Caucus and member of the House Task Force on AI, issued a RFI on the intersection of AI and healthcare. During the meeting, Dr. Sharma highlighted ASGE’s mission to seamlessly integrate AI into GI care, enhance patient outcomes, and drive innovation in gastroenterology through cutting-edge AI solutions. In the RFI, Rep. Bera stated that “if used responsibly AI has the potential to transform efficiency of patient are, improve health outcomes, lower costs and make other advancements in the field.” ASGE agrees and will be responding to the RFI. The RFI will provide vital information to the AI Task Force on the current state of AI in the healthcare industry. Rep. Last week, HCIF's Health Equity Data Strategy hosted a webinar last week for collaborative participants. The webinar, "Data Disaggregation: The Next Step in Using Data to Identify Disparities", featured Julia Iyasere, MD, MBA, and Amelia Shapiro, MBA, of NewYork-Presbyterian Dalio Center for Health Justice. Amelia and Dr. Iyasere shared best practices for disaggregating REaL and SOGI Data to identify disparities in care, including the importance of standardizing REaL data before disaggregation, examples of data dashboards and tools that aid data disaggregation, and appropriate measures for disaggregation that are impactful and actionable to address disparities. CMS and insurers are moving too slowly to evolve payment matrices focused on advancing technologies like AI assistants, home devices and data interpretation solutions that help expedite discharge planning from the acute settings, reduce readmits and help support consumers-as-patients with living safely at home. My team has found creative solutions to reduce avoidable bed days and readmits. However, what we have learned and are applying, needs to scale across the entire healthcare system and there has to be sustainable funding beyond grants like CalAIM. Shifting the financial model alone is not sufficient for the transition - the care delivery, workforce, and many other pieces of the ecosystem with which PCPs interact also need to adjust accordingly. Funding to allow for the startup costs of transformation must be made available.
