KIOXIA Group ends production cutting strategy — 3D #NAND prices could stabilize or decline 💡 After more than 1.5 years of underutilization #Kioxia has resumed full production after 20 months of cuts. Improved market conditions are behind the changes, reports Nikkei. This potentially means that the world's fourth-largest maker of 3D NAND is back to competing for market share, which could mean price drops for #flashmemory. The company has also secured refinancing of ¥540 billion ($3.424 billion) and a new line of credit worth ¥210 billion ($1.332 billion) from its lenders. In June, Kioxia increased production to full capacity at its #Yokkaichi and #Kitakami plants, which produce NAND #flash #memory, the report says. The production cuts, which began in October 2022, were a response to declining demand for Kioxia's 3D NAND memory designed for #smartphones, with reductions exceeding 30% at their peak. Additionally, the launch of a new fab at the Kitakami site has been delayed from 2023 to at least 2025. The Death of #LCDs, Means New Life for #Chips Major moves in recent weeks show that LCD's days are numbered. But it's great timing for semiconductor makers - Opinion by Tim Culpan (高燦鳴) 🤩 Around 20 years ago Tim Culpan (高燦鳴) was in a media briefing with a senior executive of Au Optronics Inc, then #Taiwan's largest flat-panel maker. #LCD #displays were hot and the days of bulky cathode-ray tube #TVs were numbered. In that meeting an astute journalist (not me!) asked the AUO boss a snarky albeit fair question: What happens when everyone’s already bought themselves a flat-screen #TV, won’t the market tank? Don’t worry, the executive replied, LCD resolution will continue to advance and these TVs will only last about eight to ten years anyway. Consumers will keep buying. He was wrong. It’s only a matter of time before LCD disappears, and three developments this past month have convinced me the end is nigh: INNOLUX群創光電 sold a 5.5G LCD fab in Southern Taiwan to TSMC.  AUO is set to sell two facilities, in #Taichung and #Tainan, to #Micron. Apple dumped #LCD for all future #iPhones, according to a Nikkei report this week. #Memory Production Utilization Near Full Capacity, Surpassing Mature Nodes Foundries 💡 As memory prices and demand rise, memory manufacturers Nanya Technology and Winbond have resumed normal production, no longer reducing output as they did last year. TrendForce Corporation and industry sources cited in a report from Liberty Times Net also indicate that memory shipments will continue to recover in the third quarter. Reportedly, memory manufacturers’ utilization rates have reached 90% to 100%, surpassing the 60% to 70% utilization rates of mature process foundries. Last year, in response to market conditions, #Winbond adjusted its inventory and reduced production at its Taichung plant by up to 30-40%. This year, as market demand has rebounded, production has resumed, with capacity now at full utilization, producing 58,000 #wafers per month. Moreover, Winbond’s #Kaohsiung plant has introduced new capacity equipment, increasing monthly production from 10,000 to 14,000 wafers and upgrading processes from 25nm to 20nm. #Nanya Technology adjusted production levels dynamically last year, reducing output by up to 20%. #HBM4 set to land sooner than expected 💡 Suppliers and JEDEC are bringing their HBM4 plans forward as they suspect the forecasted Gen #AI boom means incoming NVIDIA GPUs will need it sooner. High bandwidth memory (#HBM) bypasses #X86 socket-connected #DRAM capacity and bandwidth limits by having #memory dies stacked on top of a logic layer, with interconnecting TSV channels, all linked to a #GPU via an interposer component providing higher bandwidth than X86 sockets. The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) confirms and issues HBM standards, with the current one being its fifth, HBM3E (extended). JEDEC has said it will issue a completed HBM4 spec by the end of this year – just few months ago the schedule was for a 2025 delivery. Preliminary HBM4 characteristics are emerging already. Embedded motherboards usually have strong scalability and support a variety of peripherals and interfaces. Technical specifications: Power consumption: Low power design, extended battery life. Performance: High computing and processing power. Anti-interference: anti-interference design and electromagnetic shielding. Scalability: Provides multiple expansion slots and interfaces. Outdoor display communication motherboard is mainly used to control the data transmission of outdoor LED display. Supports multiple data transmission modes, such as Ethernet. HDMI and DVI communication interface. Embedded motherboards and outdoor display communication motherboards play different but complementary roles in embedded systems. The embedded motherboard, as the core of the system, is responsible for data processing and control, while the outdoor display communication motherboard is responsible for displaying information to the user in a visual way. Both need to have high stability and high reliability to adapt to a variety of complex working environments.

Texas Instruments Wins $4.6 Billion in #ChipsAct Grants, Loans - Funding will support $18 billion in spending in #Texas, #Utah - Biden administration almost finished allocating #chips grants Texas Instruments Inc. is set to receive $1.6 billion in Chips Act grants and $3 billion in loans, the #Bidenadministration announced Friday, marking the latest major award from a program designed to boost #American #semiconductormanufacturing. The funding will help pay for one factory in Utah and two in Texas — projects that will cost about $18 billion through 2029 — the Commerce Department said in a statement. The effort is expected to generate around 2,000 #manufacturing #jobs and thousands more in #construction. In total, #TexasInstruments plans to spend around $40 billion across both states, including an additional two factories in #Sherman, Texas. It’s likely that those will come online after 2030, and the Commerce Department has said it will prioritize projects that will be done by the end of the decade. Leading or Bleeding Edge? #TSMC Q3 result is terrible news for #Intel and #Samsung The easiest way to become a millionaire is to start as a 50x billionaire and build a #Semiconductor #Foundry. Within a short while, you will be stripped of most of your cash while having a big, beautiful cheeselayer concrete box full of the most expensive toys anybody has ever imagined. And then the fun begins. If you are lucky, you now have the most advanced semiconductor #technology in the world and are waiting for customers to break into your sales offices. #AI customers are screaming for capacity on 3nm processes, so why do we have to check if our #phones are disconnected? These questions could be asked in the corner offices of the two contenders to the foundry Game of Thrones occupied by TSMC. Both Samsung Electronics and Intel Corporation are jumping from disappointment to disappointment while trying to convince everybody that they should take a gamble. If they are lucky enough to find customers, they will find out that their new fab and technology are years away from profitability, primarily due to TSMC’s business model. semiStocks: Big Caps and Growth Stock Trends                     ... for the week ending Aug 16, 2024 As for the longer term picture, last week's gains were enough to recover its lower channel line. This is another positive sign to what I noted of last week's "positive sign that the local bottom might have passed." That said, a lot will hinge on Fed Chair Powell's talks next week. The market is expecting hints of a 25 to 50 bp rate cut in September. As I've written since last year, don't expect it until the election is over. So we may see Powell dig a deep hole in Jackson Hole. The biggest challenge next week will be for semiconductor stock investors to push my index back into the middle of its channel. Last week was brilliant: Nvidia recovered 49 points to clear the 200% bar. It is simply in a class of its own, closing in on its 226% peak in June. TSMC cleared the 100% bar, while Broadcom came just short. Advantest recovered 21 points, moving up to 2nd, while KLA's 16 pointer extended its lead over the big caps.
