"Overall, I’d characterize the ecosystem as iterating. OpenAI and GitHub launched their features at roughly $20-30 per month. This initial pricing has anchored the market at least for now in that range. Microsoft & ServiceNow have stated AI features increased productivity by approximately 50 percent. If buyers act rationally & reduce headcount by 50%1 which we know is probably not true, then to maintain the same revenue per customer, price would need to double. We can observe that in three of the companies’ pricing strategy above. If pricing really does provide information (see the work of Mauboussin), then these companies are pricing in a 40% productivity gain. I think the most interesting data companies are super niche verticals. Go deep vertically before you go horizontal. Something random like- Rubber pricing and demand. Insights on the automotive industry have always been in high demand. Deep insights into the storage facility space. A market that has publicly traded companies or a futures contract is where I see the biggest upside. What are some of your favorite companies with deep sector or industry specific datasets. I think J.D. Power is interesting. Aggregate Intelligence, Inc. is another one with a bunch of super specific industry datasets.

There are two very different ways to play in Silicon Valley: playing to win versus playing to make plan. VC moonshots dominate the first. PE platform acquisitions and roll-ups dominate the second. But these plays are very different, attracting different investors and different employers. And the catch is most of the main strategy books in Silicon Valley were written for the playing to win world. The biggest risk is run strategies and hire people more appropriate to one world than the other. In this post, I'll explore both and the differences between them.
