Kudos Samuel Youn. It's great to see this called out from premium publishers. MFA in some senses was encouraged over the years by giving such importance on the (now perceived as) vanity metrics and KPIs. Take for example infinite scroll which until recently was perceived as a positive way to increase content consumption and in turn yield more revenue in comparison to traditional clicks to more content. Now it's been targeted as a source or signal of MFA. Everyone along the chain between the publisher and the buyer benefited from an increase in revenue which Samuel rightly points out was heavily incentivised through rev share based relationships. The answer may be clear (find a way to incentivise non MFA behavior) but the path there is murk at best if only left to publishers to remedy on their own... especially if they are handed more rev share based solutions to help solve things. Also love your call out to Sovrn as they have moved away from rev shares (credit to Walter Knapp for seeing this years ago on the SSP side). It takes alot to go against the grain but I believe (hope?) that we will see more to follow. #adtech #mfa

We’re not there yet in the sports world but we could reach that point soon. Where “artificial intelligence could become a meaningful sponsorship category.” Just looking at this year’s MLB Playoffs, AI advertising is on full display. Terry Lefton argues that this is only the beginning and that sooner or later, AI could emerge as its own category. In this new CTV explainer, I take a closer look at SPO. As streaming audiences continue to lean into AVOD and FAST services, the volume of addressable CTV inventory will continue to grow. This growth takes place at a time when SSPs are looking to build buy side capabilities, and DSPs sell side offerings. This means those on the buy side will be able to buy CTV through a number of programmatic routes offered by DSPs, SSPs and Ad Servers, making it much easier for ad buyers to get their ads onto the biggest screen in the household, but first, they need to understand their buying paths. #CTV #Streaming #AVOD #FAST #Programmatic #AdTech

✅⬇️ AdExchanger (5/24): “To some degree, the digitization of TV marketing is inevitable. Wall Street investors prefer advertising and media companies with the most promising long-term profitability. One way to get there is for streaming companies to access shopper data and strike partnerships with retailers to court advertisers with the promise of performance and attribution. Publishers want to relabel connected TV as a performance channel, (an analyst) said. But if that happens, she continued, “CTV will lose its cred” among buyers and brands as a viable replacement for legacy linear commercials. Say what you will about linear, but it’s a mass reach vehicle. And if CTV doesn’t provide the same reach opportunity, Wall Street may cool on public companies with a CTV advertising business, (the analyst) said. The reality is, upper-funnel channels, like streaming, have a strong downstream impact on outcomes even if they don’t directly drive a purchase. For example, CTV’s ability to drive mass reach and brand awareness is why more retail media spend is moving to streaming, said Max Willens, a senior analyst at eMarketer, also speaking at Programmatic I/O this week. Roku appears to be gaining positive momentum, recently announcing a 14% jump in streaming households in Q2 & this latest report from Pixalate shows it with a dominate position in the global connected TV (CTV) programmatic advertising market. Another big winner was Apple, which increased its share of programmatic CTV ads delivered to the Apple TV from 5% to 13% over the last year, leapfrogging Amazon's FireTV. According to Pixalate measurement, Samsung Electronics share fell 45%, while arch rival LG Electronics grew its share 68%. To compile the data, Pixalate says it analysed programmatic advertising activity across 100k+ CTV apps & nearly 6bn global open programmatic ad transactions in Q2 2024.

The power of automated advertising at DanAds Summit 2024: Dan Lapinski, Senior Ads Manager, Product Marketing, Roku: Small and medium businesses represent more ad spend than the big premium advertisers. But automation and efficiencies in workflows is key—you can't have individual people setting up campaigns for each one of these. Self-serve gives access to data directly—gotta have the growth-hacking mindset to get the most out of it. No obstacles there to optimizing and activating. Setting up the front door for all advertisers is crucial. David Dembowski, SVP, Global Sales, Operative: The next best thing after the front door (ease of buying) is transparency. Knowing where your ads are going, how much you're paying, who you are appearing in front of. Getting past legacy behaviors/systems—experimentation, but also updating your metrics to track outcomes. That drives change. You need to work with your partners to understand what success looks like, and iterate as campaigns go on. Lower-funnel supply is hard fought over—bringing performance advertisers (e.g., DTC) up the funnel realizing value of awareness is key. But creating more of that lower-funnel supply is crucial for publishers. Alex Campbell, Director, AdTech & Programmatic, theScore: The smaller buyers are the most intense because every dollar counts. But it's hard for a pub to give them the most time when the spend is not as big as others. We are thinking of our platform as the front door for everything, not just smaller buyers—media planners from agencies accessing and working out their full plans. With self-serve, you're thinking, "How can I show their spend is performing?" but we need to scale that style of service up to the bigger buyers/clients. #danadssummit24

If you work in AdTech sales or marketing, and talk about programmatic a lot but don't yet know the origin of the IAB Tech Lab protocol that facilitates it, I highly recommend taking a listen to this Marketecture Media podcast between Ari Paparo & Bill Simmons, who launched it back in 2010. The discussion gets into the weeds of why a protocol was needed, who the first DSPs and SSPs were to support it, and how it has gone from 6 pages, to over a 100 as more digital channels such as CTV & DOOH embrace programmatic trading. It was good to hear them talking about some of the names in AdTech we no longer hear also such as Turn, DataXu, The Rubicon Project, Nexage, AppNexus et al as they set the scene... #DigitalAdvertising #Programmatic #AdTech #DSP #SSP

I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)
