we’ve seen over 400+ marketing activations built & deployed via komo this year. here's what we’re seeing at a macro-level, what we think is changing (and not changing) and how we’re thinking about the customer engagement space heading into 2025. - gamification still works. mcdonald's monopoly still drives foot traffic & sales, decades later. proof that "simple" incentives still capture attention. - active participation > passive consumption. spotify wrapped is clearly the gold standard here. the best campaigns put consumers in the drivers seat. - distribution is king. the best obsess over how to get their activations seen, not just made. wayne campbell was wrong, if you build it, they will not come. - offline—>online is growing. as tim armstrong reminded me on a podcast recently, 80% of the economy is still offline. activations that show up where customers are (the real world) and convert anon IRL shoppers/consumers into known contacts is massive. - owned audiences as a priority. relying on socials is inevitably renting space. the best in class are doubling down on 1pd and building owned digital spaces.

Product Marketers are accountable to more groups than any other member of your go-to-market team. By "accountable" I mean that a Product Marketer needs to bear in mind the interests, goals, and needs of a wide array of people, groups, and teams. At any given time, a PMM is accountable to: - Customer Success - Product - Marketing - Customers - The Market - Other PMMs - and a lot more This means that the best product marketers are masterful at seeing the big picture (not getting too lost in any one group's needs), but also can dive into the weeds when a particular party needs it. It also means that most PMMs are dealing with: - attention fatigue - blockers from all sides - and the inevitability of no decision pleasing every group. So next time you work with a PMM, know that they are juggling wayyyy more than whatever it is you're asking of them. 💛

Stop obsessing over launch tiers and focus on launch cadence. I've interviewed a lot of product marketers lately, many of them great. But my eyes always glaze over when I ask about their approach to product launches and they whip out a spreadsheet or walk me through their "framework" for prioritizing launches based on a tiered approach. This isn't necessarily wrong, it's just not going to differentiate you from other PMM candidates. And it's not going to help you wield influence and drive impact within your company if you do get the job. One of the most impactful things you CAN do is put a stake in the ground around launch cadence. At LivePerson, for example, we've committed to doing two major product launches per year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. We call our launch events Spark – and they're as much about sparking action internally as they are about bringing our new products and capabilities to market. A semi-annual launch cadence acts as a forcing function and rallying point for the entire organization. It drives urgency and accountability around everything from product development and adoption to sales enablement and operations to customer marketing and success. The Spark model also encourages a strategic storytelling approach to GTM. Instead of launching capabilities as one-offs (informed by product availability and those silly "tiers"), a predictable launch cadence allows us to think thematically and focus on outcomes rather than inputs, solutions rather than specs. Our Fall launch, for instance, will hone in on the Assist phase of our Conversational Flywheel which is all about the agent experience and how brands can spark a better CX by empowering their people with AI and other agent-centric technology. We'll be launching some transformative new products and some smaller stuff that will make agents happier and more efficient but that might have gotten lost in a tier-based launch framework. Churn is a silent killer, and it's one thing I've put a lot of effort into taming at Law Insider. Surfacing features, launching new SKU's, providing more value, and showing ROI is part of it. But no matter how much we reduce churn, Annual accounts are just so much stickier and they have a much higher CLV (5x!) than monthly accounts. Annual Accounts are not only stickier, they have far less churn. Why do we think that is? #productmarketing

Here's the biggest 🚩 brand managers make when trying to understand their customers: They settle for surface-level data from outdated research methods. If you want to truly understand your customers and reduce churn, you need to focus on 3 different routes: 1. Understand your customers better 🧠 2. Act on that understanding faster ⚡ 3. Do it at a scale that actually moves the needle 📈 But here's the kicker: The market research industry is still relying on methods developed in the 1950s! 🤯 As an anthropologist, I've seen firsthand how some of these traditional research methods often fall short. (Imagine trying to understand the ocean by looking at a glass of water or making assumptions about the ocean.) During my fieldwork, I once spent an entire year conducting just 75 interviews. It was in the context of a broader ethnographic study and it was exhausting, time-consuming, and still barely scratched the surface of the insights I needed. That experience taught me a crucial lesson: sometimes, the most valuable insights come from unexpected places and unscripted moments. So, how can you dive deeper and truly understand your customers or the people at the center of your research? - Instead of just age and location, explore social, emotional, and behavioral factors. - What are your customers' values, attitudes, and lifestyles? - Don't just ask "Do you like our product?" Ask "How does our product fit into your daily life?" Better yet ground it in lived examples. - Sometimes, the most valuable insights come from seemingly unrelated areas of your customers' lives. - Pay attention to the specific words and phrases your customers use. They can reveal underlying emotions and motivations. - Don't just focus on the average user. Your most extreme users (both positive and negative) often provide the most insightful feedback. - Ensure your research methods allow for anonymity and encourage candid responses. - Use surveys for the 'what' and in-depth interviews for the 'why'. Remember, the goal isn't just to confirm what you already know - it's to uncover the unexpected. That's where true innovation happens. By diving deeper into customer insights, you're not just reducing churn. You're building a foundation for long-term customer relationships and sustainable growth.
