"A new study by MIT researchers examines summertime heat exposure in prisons across the United States and identifies characteristics within prison facilities that can further contribute to a population’s vulnerability to summer heat. The study’s authors used high-spatial-resolution air temperature data to determine the daily average outdoor temperature for each of 1,614 prisons in the U.S., for every summer between the years 1990 and 2023. They found that the prisons that are exposed to the most extreme heat are located in the southwestern U.S., while prisons with the biggest changes in summertime heat, compared to the historical record, are in the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, and parts of the Midwest." #InsightstoAction #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice https://lnkd.in/eSajgKse

Gordon Henry and I are co-editing a special issue of the journal Genealogy,(Un)Settling Genealogies: Self-Indigenization in Media, Arts, Politics, and Academia. This is the second paper to be published. I find it unusual, but they are publishing papers one-by-one as they finish peer review. We expect to have 10+ papers in this collection. When they are all published, we will do an introduction to the issue. The advantage for the authors is they get published much more quickly than usual. I am finding the process to be an interesting experiment. This paper is behind a paywall. Please do download directly from your university if you can. This is good for the author. And let me know by message if you can't download it, and you're interested in reading this paper by Dina Gilio-Whitaker (American Indian Studies, Cal State San Marcos), "Indigeneity, Nationhood, Racialization, and the U.S. Settler State: Why Political Status Matters to Native ‘Identity’ Formation." Dina's paper provides good background for this special issue that explains the differences and contradictions between tribal citizenship and histories of tribal governance and engagement with colonizer power structures vs. state desires to racialize Native Peoples (I am decreasingly a fan of the I-word).

Every Historian has a unique history that influences their narrative in writing history. Historiography aims to transcend personal biases, yet history often follows individual lines, potentially limiting accurate references in the future. #History #Historiography #Narrative #Bias

PS Educator Winter 2025 Call for Papers (December 15) Research notes, reviews, and reflections are all welcome for the next Political Science Educator, a newsletter of the Political Science Education Section of the American Political Science Association, to be further distributed on APSA Educate. --Reflections can be on any teaching-related topic but should have some implications, advice, or ideas for other political science educators. --Reviews can be on any relevant materials (books on teaching and learning, movies and tv that are useful in the classroom, educational technology, etc.) --Research notes should focus on pedagogy questions and should be considered as working papers (and have not undergone peer review.) --For all types of submission, we strongly encourage connections to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) literature in political science and beyond. Jeannette Bastian and I enjoyed the seamless process of writing (yet another) journal article together. In this discussion, we remembered the pioneering work of #VictoriaBorgOFlaherty, late retired national archivist of St Kitts and Nevis. We propose in our article "Archival Dignity, Colonial Records, and Community Narratives", her flagship website project (www.historicstkitts.kn) is indeed a model for giving archival value and 'pride of place' to community narratives on par with shelved colonial records. In so doing, archives can offer 'archival dignity' to those whose records are unwritten, yet performed. For small (national/community) archives, web technology offers a practical and tangible solution to the ideals of archival decolonization. Your repository can be home and provide access to both textual and intangible memory. The nature and severity of threats to democracy in the United States have seen a dramatic escalation in the past 10 years. In a new article in Public Administration Review, Barry Bozeman, John Nelson, Stuart Bretschneider, and I argue that the historical ethos among public administrators of neutral competence rises to complicity when faced with political authorities who seek to undermine, curtail, or corrupt democracy. We review strands of public administration theory relevant to the United States governmental system to create and assess a catalogue of responses that public administrators can take when faced with democratic deformation.
