Great work Dr Ricky Campbell-Allen! We could probably do with more of those ⬆️ in Table 1 to help schools and the ‘centre’ do better through the “collective sense-making” your conclusion references. If one aim of the middle tier existing is coherence (I think it is) then the ‘upward’ work is how to prevent coherence being dictate rather than context appropriate alignment… or something like that:) Look forward to your next publication.

I first became interested in the middle tier of schooling systems when I worked in the Boston Public School district, an urban schooling system of around 125 schools serving around 57,000 students. I’m delighted to share my recent paper from the Centre for Strategic Education, where I argue that it is a potentially underutilised enabler in the Australian context – what might be called the ‘invisible middle tier’ in Australian schooling systems. Drawing on my PhD research, I argue that the middle tier, known as the region in Queensland, has an important role to play in supporting school improvement, creating coherence, and delivering on the promise of equity in school systems. A huge thank you to Anthony Mackay and the Centre for Strategic Education folks, who have made this free to access and download. This is the first cab off the rank from the PhD research. It's time for me to get working on the next one on Principal Supervisors and their work with school principals. https://lnkd.in/gkTcskhd

At this link you have free access to a brand new paper, co-authored with Giorgio Brunello, Clementina Crocé and Pamela Giustinelli. We exploited original data that we collected among middle school teachers in Veneto, thanks to the collaboration of Veneto Regional School Office and prof Giorgia Menditto. We find that middle school teachers’ personalities affect how they interpret students’ socioeconomic backgrounds when forming beliefs about the students’ potential high school performance. These beliefs, in turn, can influence how teachers guide students in their high school choices, with important long-term consequences. https://lnkd.in/diGjpiXW

Is direct admissions here to stay? Students sure hope so. Knowing where you are admitted and your initial scholarship helps them narrow down their options and focus on the community fit and outcomes instead of worrying about "should I fall in love and then find out I can't afford it?" (That was a common concern voiced in recent surveys) Full results from the annual junior survey and link to register for the discussion on Thursday are in the comments.

Conversations about postsecondary value have been prevalent in policy wonk circles for some time. But students and their families rarely get their information from the same voices and sources we’re listening to. So, it should come as little surprise in the current moment (anti-DEI attacks, complicated FAFSA rollout, student debt cancellation, safety concerns on college campuses, etc.) that public trust in higher education, specifically the value of postsecondary education, is waning. It is our job to offer students an alternate narrative, one that redefines value by prioritizing equitable access and economic mobility over selectivity and prestige. To effectively move the needle, we need more stories spotlighting the innovative initiatives happening across the country that are putting student outcomes front and center in that work. It’s for that reason why I was particularly enthusiastic to support Inside Higher Ed’s latest collection of articles. Dig in here:

Don't forget to register for the Exploring the Impact of the Value Data Collaborative webinar session on June 6th from 12 PM - 1 PM EST. Join the Coleridge Initiative, the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), and representatives from multiple state and higher education agencies to learn more about the Postsecondary Value Framework and how it can inform more equitable and effective higher education policies. This session will focus on the Value Data Collaborative (VDC). The VDC is a data-driven approach to understanding the return on investment in higher education. The VDC uses the Postsecondary Value Framework, developed by the Postsecondary Value Commission, which provides a basis for understanding the return on investment in postsecondary education, particularly by race, ethnicity, income, and gender.
