Why top performing AE’s spend 45 minutes a day doing this one thing most avoid. As AE’s climb the ladder, many fall into a dangerous trap, they stop prospecting. Here's why this is a critical error: 1. Pipeline Dependency: Relying solely inbound leads is a recipe for disaster. Your pipeline is your lifeline. 2. Skill Erosion: Prospecting keeps you sharp. Stop, and you get rusty fast. 3. Missed Opportunities: MQLs and initial inquiries often slip through the cracks. That's money left on the table. 4. Cultural Impact: When AE’s stop prospecting, it sends the wrong message to the entire team. Instead, build a culture of pipeline and prospecting: ✅ Set a daily goal: 20 new prospects or 45 minutes of prospecting. Every. Single. Day. ✅. Make AE’s responsible for a large % of their own pipeline. This starts in the recruitment process. ✅. Embrace imperfection: Not every AE is great at prospecting, but that's no excuse to let them avoid it. If you have capacity, you need to get out there and find more business for yourself. The best AE’s I’ve come across never stop hunting.

I meet and talk with 5-10 of the greatest GTM minds on the planet every week. CRO’s, VPs of Sales, CMO’s. 100% agree that getting outbound right is one of the hardest parts of their business, why? 1. Recruiting is hard again The same voices that sold tech sales as an easy path to 6 figures are now the voices saying the BDR role is dead. They sold a bill of goods to people who didn’t understand how hard this role is, are surprised these people who chose a path because it was sold as “easy” aren’t performing, and now have ulterior motives to pivot to a new message. Hard jobs are hard to recruit for. 2. Lack of Leadership 2020 through mid 2022 we had a bunch of capital bloat and talent bloat enter the market. Just like we have overvalued “zombie” companies we have overvalued “zombie” leaders who don’t know how to coach good habits for this type of market. Outbound was easy from 2014ish to summer 2022. 8 years is a long time, most of the voices we hear only know those times or only know what type of sales motion. 3. Absolute statements muddy the waters I've been around the block enough to click on their profile and see their track record. 99.9% of folks make these statements only sold transactional commodity technology, sold to GTM teams, or in most cases – only both. What works depends on multiple factors: ASP, buyer persona, and complexity of your sales process/customer’s buying process. Depending on what you sell – sometimes you are going to need to pick up the phone or send a note to get someone’s attention. That will NEVER change. 4. Generational consideration for career pathing is key BDR is still hands down the best route to market for future AE’s. You have to learn to prospect and get meetings before you can run a meeting, qualify, and manage a deal. No argument from me on CAC math – thousands of products require veracious qualification, deal management, and creating customer consensus. You can not run those types of deals and prospect. If any Voice had EVER done that type of role or ran a team that did, they wouldn’t say what they are. For BDRs to stick around for more than 14 months, you need steps in the BDR path where comp, responsibility and role grow over time. 5. Results are tanking Point 1&2. You are the equivalent of a fire fighter that starts a fire then takes the glory when you put it out. I absolutely loved the movie Backdraft – but stop it. These are the ideas of “not famous” GTM people. People who spend all day serving their customer and developing their people – not posting on this platform. They don’t care about clicks, followers, or impressions. They care about revenue and earnings. Outbound is hard. It (almost) always has been. Yesterday, I ran a GTMsession for GTMfund portfolio company founders and their executive teams with the brand and content marketing legend, Udi Ledergor 🏳‍🌈. (🤔 GTM what now? GTMfund… GTMnow…) Yes, we have more words attached to the acronym GTM, though not widely talked about since they’re internal. GTMsessions are monthly private digital live sessions on various go-to-market topics, led by an executive operator who is an expert in the field. They’re available to GTMfund portfolio companies and their executive teams. Being closed-door and not open to the public, these sessions allow any and all questions to be comfortably asked, the conversation tailored to be hyper-specific to startups and their current concerns, questions, etc. We didn't even get through half of the moderated points that I had prepared because the questions for Udi just kept rolling in (a good thing, that's the point of these sessions). Udi dropped some 🔥 insights that we’ll share more on later, but for now, Stan Rymkiewicz nailed summarizing key takeaways on how Gong thinks about content creation and distribution that I've dropped in the comments. One key pain point discussed in the session was the challenge of keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of content marketing. It often feels like by the time one strategy is implemented, its effectiveness has already diminished. So, what’s next? How do you stay ahead of the curve? Partner leaders- we've got work to do. Sam Jacobs leads a community of CRO and GTM leaders- he's one of the most thoughtful, experienced, and effective people guiding the next generation of business leaders. This week he called out how poorly defined and poorly understood the partner playbook is- not just in the broader market, but even among the community of GTM experts. There's no playbook, it's hard to plan around, and "A bunch of partnership people standing around in a circle talking about how they're undervalued won't move the needle." He is 100% right. On the other side, I just got off a call with Dan McAllister, SVP Global Alliances and Channels at Boomi. Dan successfully led partnerships at SAP, Netsuite, Box, Mulesoft, and Salesforce before this role. When it comes to recognizing the opportunities the ecosystem presents his business, defining a strategy, crystalizing a joint business plan with his peers on the leadership team, and then executing the plan, Dan is one of the best in the world. #Partnerships are not one size fits all. The gap Sam called out in understanding partnerships and the partnering community's ability to close it is real. I'd like to personally invite Sam and all GTM leaders who want to understand partnerships better to join our Ecosystem Business Summit next week to hear how the best partnership leaders define partner strategy, rally their teams to understand the partner opportunity in GTM planning and lead the business through execution. We might all be great at recognizing the opportunity partnerships present, but unless you can rally the business around it you're failing as a partnership leader. We've got work to do! This survey is chock full of interesting stats. Larger decision committees, an increased need to support buyers in finding the information they need in their own - expected. This statement stopped me in my tracks: “The 2024 B2B Buyer survey illustrates that nearly half (48%) of buyers are using AI tools to research software, and that an overwhelming 98% of those who are using it agree that it’s been impactful.” Nearly half already! I’ve shared before that a growing percentage of our inbound conservations were driven by prospects asking chatGPT for solution suggestions. It’s logical to expect this will increase. It’s causing us to reconsider the metrics for how we evaluate the content we create and continue to emphasize that it is the providing of information (regardless of where it is created), that can give you the advantage in the longer, more complex, B2B cycles. Capital efficiency. The principle is good, but often becomes a crutch. Everyone wants to drive leads and top of funnel in the most efficient way. But only few understand the true missed opportunity cost of cutting corners. I've seen fantastic messaging, sequencing and targeting underperform. I've seen excellent marketing funnels underperform. It's almost always because opportunity falls through the cracks or is missed entirely. All in the name of capital efficiency (aka "budget restraints"). It's very difficult for any lead gen tactic to be effective in isolation. Outbound campaigns are much more effective when backed by strategic content production & marketing efforts. Content and marketing efforts are much more effective with a smart outbound campaign to capitalize on hand raisers. The key isn't to pick one or the other. If cash is tight, a single campaign deployed in the proper channels to the right audience that includes advertising, MQL generation, nurturing follow ups, and 1:1 personalized outbound will yield far more results than spreading cold outbound or paid marketing campaigns across 5+ verticals/use cases If marketing & sales are focused... operating as one, well oiled machine in a singular direction... You gain data faster You convert more leads to conversations You learn faster You pivot faster You win faster As with most things in life and business Focus & discipline is the answer. Scared money doesn't make money.

Any successful CRO program uses revenue impact as a guiding light. It has to. Or your business ends up chasing $5,000 ROI opportunities when you could be honing in on $500K+ ROI opportunities.  Businesses are often so concerned with driving top-line revenue growth that they don’t tie a monetary value to their A/B tests. But you can’t place value on a winning test if you don’t factor in the time or money it takes to find it. Sizing the potential revenue impact of any A/B test is the only way to discern between actual winners and tests that are simply a waste of your time and resources.  Even in 2024, rarely are eCommerce businesses asking themselves if the ROI on a test is worth it. But your business should be! It’s time to stop treating CRO like a democracy in which your business implements the idea that gets the most votes – and instead, start approaching CRO with real data and consideration for ROI.  #CRO #ecommerce

In his newsletter today, ✅ Tyler Pleiss ✅ spoke about an account-based #GTM - something we've been talking a lot about at Personal ABM: An Account-Based GTM Firm. He defined it as the process in which our GTM teams (marketing, outbound, sales, CX) align on set of accounts to prioritize each quarter to drive meetings booked, qualified opportunities, pipeline and revenue. However, to me (Kristina Jaramillo) and my partner (Eric Gruber) -- that alignment is only part of what an account-based GTM is. Remember, #ABM is not just a tiering, segmentation, prioritization and targeting strategy. When you take an account-based GTM approach, you focus on the interactions that teams are having and the account experience that's being delivered across the buyer's journey and customer lifecycle by each team. You recognize that the interactions and experiences that 1 team delivers will impact another team's interactions and experiences and the overall account experience. Your Sales to CS handoff process needs work. Call Comcast and you'll get a full lesson in how not to treat customers. Ask them to go through a bunch of prompts and repeat the issue 20x before speaking to an agent. You are probably thinking: well our process isn't THAT bad. Are you sure? I bet your process looks something like this: 1. Someone submits a lead or responds to an outbound message (information sharing 1) 2. A BDR follows up to qualify them and set a meeting (person 1, information sharing 2) 3. An AE sets up a Discovery meeting (person 2, information sharing 3) 4. 60-90 day sales cycle (information sharing 4-5) 5. Closed won, handed to implementation for 30 days (person 3, information sharing 6) 6. Moved over to CS (person 4, information sharing 7) Imagine the frustration customers have when they have to share the same info (company information, business problems, etc.) 7 times to 4 different people. Are you "loosing" revenue from existing accounts? After many discussions at #RevOpsAF last week, I've noted down a bunch of questions that should help drive more revenue with expansion opportunities: - Are you pro-actively sourcing CS-qualified expansion opportunities ("expansion opps")? - Who managed your expansion opps? AEs, AMs, CSMs, team deals? - How do you comp on expansion opps? - Do you have an expansion opp record type to run your sales process separate from your new logo motion? - What are leading indicators to increase likelihood of closing expansion opps? - Do you managers have good visibility into those indicators to run data-driven deal reviews for expansion opps? - Do you know your win rate, stage conversion rates, sales cycle length of your expansion opps? - Do you forecast revenue from expansion opps? If so, how? - Who own the expansion revenue number in the executive team? CCO, CRO? Expanding existing accounts does not only drive revenues, but reduces churn as you expand the use cases, and depth of your partnerships. Matt Heinz, I definitely agree that #GTM teams are selling and marketing too fast -- and it is slowing down closed deals. In addition to talking about product and price too early, pushing buyers faster than they're ready to go, dragging buying committee members along -- I also that teams are focused on selling and marketing ROI before they have got buy-in on change. Teams will push out the Forrester Total Economic Impact (TEI) reports when they should be focusing on the cost of inaction (COI). Buyers need to see their current "state" and see a big problem before you can show them a "future" state.

My first job out of college, I worked at an agency that was implementing a new, innovative technology for B2B marketing - Marketing Automation Platforms. Ah, it was a simpler time: gated ebooks, email nurtures, linear journeys–total control and straight-forward measurability. That was OVER A DECADE  AGO. Think of how much has changed since then… ☎ In 2010, the majority of cell phones were not “Smart” (and we still called them as such). 🌩 “The cloud” wasn’t a thing. Over 90% of data was held in local servers. 📈 LI had less than 100 million users in 2010. Today, more than 1 billion users in 200 countries. It’s mind boggling to be pulling from the same playbook from over a decade ago. Technology has changed, society has changed, buyer behavior and selling has changed. And if you can’t take my word for it, take the word of the Marketo grandfather himself :)

❌ Don't show your prospects your pricing tiers during your sales process ❌ Why not...? "If you end up in the wrong pricing tier, you'll leave" This is why Greg O'Brien, CPA doesn't show *all* options to the client, just the one they recommend. This positions them as an advisor... not a vendor 😅 So if you run your consult well, you should have an opinion on what the client absolutely *needs* and recommend that package. Showing all the packages creates confusion when clarity drives conversion.
