What do you find compelling to move others to action?  Three truths this article highlights to grow understanding of children’s palliative care to move others to action: 🦺 “When children are seriously ill, the whole family is in a state of emergency.” Holistic care that considers the entire family is essential. 🌅 “A children's hospice can provide relief.” Providers can meet the needs of children and families at a critical time - both in and out of formal settings. 🛏️ Great children’s palliative care recognises the needs of the whole family. This week we're attending the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (#AAIC24) in Philadelphia, joined some of the brightest minds in dementia research to discuss groundbreaking advancements in the field. As we navigated through the second and third days of the event, we have a new podcast with Caitlyn Fastenau, Dr Balogun Wasiu, Dr Jessica Caldwell, and Sophia Krix - listen or watch on our website, in YouTube or in your podcast App to hear their highlights. Top takeaways: 1. Harnessing the Power of AI in Dementia Research: lots of emphasis on the transformative potential of AI and machine learning in Alzheimer's research. The integration of these technologies is not only enhancing our understanding of disease mechanisms but also paving the way for early diagnosis and personalised treatment plans. 2. Advancements in Blood Biomarkers: Lots of work on the development of novel neuroinflammatory biomarkers. Promoising a shift towards less invasive and more cost-effective diagnostic methods. This could significantly increase accessibility, especially in resource-limited settings. 3. Prevention and Lifestyle Interventions: New compelling insights into the role of lifestyle and preventative measures in reducing Alzheimer's risk. Underscoring the importance of early intervention and personalised care, particularly for women, who are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer's disease. 4. Precision Medicine and Early Biomarkers: Precision medicine could be the future in diagnosing Alzheimer's at a much earlier stage, allowing for timely and targeted therapeutic interventions. 5. Bridging the Gap in Disease Subtypes: One of the most fascinating talks was by David Bennett from Rush University. He introduced the concept of using multi-omics data to define disease heterogeneity and subtypes, moving beyond traditional frameworks to understand the diverse molecular pathways involved in Alzheimer's progression. This approach could revolutionise how we classify and treat different forms of dementia. 6. Pennsylvania patients face challenges accessing mental health services, from long wait times to severe psychiatrist shortages across the state. But rather than making it easier for qualified professionals to practice in underserved communities, Pennsylvania's outdated restrictions make it difficult and expensive for NPs to bring high-quality health care to these local communities. Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Washington County, PA recognized the need for mental health care in their community and opened Southpointe Psychiatry & Wellness, bringing vital mental health care to their community. PCNP spoke with these dedicated PMHNPs, discussing the challenges and restrictive red tape they continue to face and the challenges Pennsylvania patients face trying to access mental health care. It's time for Pennsylvania to pass full practice authority for NPs, removing the restrictions that block patients from accessing the care they need! Full practice authority would bring lifesaving primary care, specialty services, and mental health care to Pennsylvania's local communities and the underserved areas that desperately need it. Pediatric mental health remains of critical importance to overall child and adolescent health and well-being. Here at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the Emergency Department, nearly 10% of adolescents 14 and older disclose suicidal thoughts or behaviors and one-third of adolescents screen positive for severe depression through the universal behavioral health screening. And in CHOP primary care practices, nearly one in four adolescents report depression symptoms that require further evaluation, and of those with depression symptoms, one in four report suicidal thoughts or a suicide attempt.
