What does it take to create new space for diversity in beauty and beyond? Our Editor in Chief Thatiana Diaz took the stage at Advertising Week New York with our client SEPHORA’s Brent Mitchell, My Code’s Alexandra Kennedy, and Digitas North America’s Danisha Lomax to address this question — and how brands can champion the advancement of representation in the beauty industry. 🎙️ Here are the panel’s top takeaways: ⛔ No lip service. Spend time with the communities you want to connect with. Invest time to listen and make consumers feel seen, heard and most importantly — supported. This community investment will change the perception of your brand and increase brand lift. 🔊 Turn up the volume during heritage months, but ensure you’re showing up intentionally and proactively year-round in multifaceted ways. If the first question asked is “What should we be doing for X month?” you need to look internally.  Being part of a community requires real participation—365. 🌐 Listen to your audience, and make sure you know where they are. The comment section should not be feared, it’s a gold mine of content and feedback. Learn where your audience is interacting with your brand and make sure you’re active in that space. The word on the whole branded content world’s lips these days is ‘distribution.’ It’s not any different at the Los Angeles Times. But Kristin Berke, Vice President of National Advertising and Branded Content is thinking about distribution though the lens of emotional impact. Today we spotlight Patrick Venetucci, CEO of IZEA, a leader in #InfluencerMarketing, and former President of dentsu and Leo Burnett, who shares some insightful #career tips with us. 1. Who are you? What’s your headline? “I'm a transformational #growth CEO who orchestrates courageous leaps. Some companies are not stretching themselves enough, which leads to becoming a "lifestyle" business. Other companies are jumping at #opportunities, but stretching their resources too far thereby putting their people in peril. I lead teams to make courageous leaps with an emphasis on strategic clarity, organizational alignment, #tech #innovation and most importantly inspiring people to reach higher.” 2. How did you find/secure your current CEO role? “Like most roles, it was serendipity. I was on the board of IZEA and there was a unique situation which created an unexpected #management vacuum. I quickly volunteered to step into the CEO role and am grateful to have this #opportunity to contribute to the growing Creator Economy.” 3. What’s been the hardest part of being a CEO? “Business rarely goes up and to the right in a smooth straight line. There are lots of unexpected zigs and zags along the way where CEO's are faced with making decisions with unpleasant consequences. It's hard, but necessary to make these kinds of decisions.” 4. What’s been the most fulfilling part of being a CEO? “I enjoy creating. I've asked my #leadership teams to imagine us sitting around a pottery wheel with our hands on the wet clay actively moulding it into a beautiful thing. I find it professionally fulfilling to be able to touch and shape all dimensions of a #business: the story, #customers, #people, #product, and #profits.”   5. “Everyone wants to be in the driver’s seat, but no one truly knows what it means to be in the driver’s seat (until you’re in it).” What does this quote mean to you? “Being a CEO carries a tremendous amount of #accountability. Don't seek to be in the chair unless you are willing to be accountable. It's important to be accountable to multiple #stakeholders during good and bad outcomes.” 6. What person in your life, living or deceased, has inspired you the most (and why)? “I continue to be inspired by my Father who passed away earlier this year. There are different types of Dad's out there. Sports dads. Beer dads. Hip dads. Tech dads. My Dad was a kind dad. The world would be a better place if we had more #kindness today.” 7. CMO's from PepsiCo TikTok and Moderna share how they believe agency partnerships can be improved. I sometimes forget the fairly unique and advantageous position we are in when speaking to brands as we get unfettered honest advice about what they are looking for from an agency (and equally what they are not). "Be an extension of our team" "Challenge us, push us" "Be a true business partner not just marketing partner, know my business, listen to our quarterly updates" All heard time and time again from brands when taking briefs. Its no surprise that the partnerships where agencies that do the above, and comparatively the brands that allow them to, are the ones that provide longer term, more fruitful partnerships that benefit both sides. #mutualsucess #brand #agency #partnerships
