Love the potential implications of these moves! This would position Criteo to operate as a full one-stop shop RMN network that could give enough of the mid to long tail of RMNs scale to compete in the future Commerce Media landscape. This is particularly interesting globally where retail media is less mature/scaled and Criteo/Skai both have a very strong market presence. Lots of momentum around the Retail Media networks as we see Instacart developing solutions, Bridg/Rippl expanding a regional grocery network in the US to scale up offers and more. At the same time, there is momentum for data only deals via LiveRamp or through TTD. The critical question remains if we will witness a separation of data from RMNs or will we see the mid to long tail band together with partners like Criteo to compete with the larger players as consolidation hits the industry? Google 🍪 announcement + Oracle 💰 settlement signal a shift to Consumer-centric advertising. The recent #adtech developments at #Google and #Oracle may seem disconnected at first, but they signify a significant shift towards consumer-centric advertising. Alongside Apple, these tech giants are embracing privacy concerns and strategically repositioning themselves by prioritizing consumers. This move aims to reduce risks and drive growth by empowering consumers, advocates, and next-gen companies to innovate new approaches in place of legacy adtech. The ripple effect is evident, with companies like Amazon and Meta expected to follow suit to mitigate the legal and financial risks highlighted in the coverage of Oracle's recent settlement. I transitioned from retail and ecommerce to adtech two decades ago with a vision to revolutionize advertising by attacking the inefficiencies of offline methods adopted in the digital realm. Seemed like an easy fix but it turned out to be a long slog. I also saw the inherent risk from cookies that hold adtech together to this day. Now it seems the consumer is finally getting a seat at the advertising table, and they don't like cookies or spam. For advertising and publishing businesses, the time is ripe to pivot towards alternative strategies in alignment with this evolving landscape. One way to get there is for streaming companies to access shopper data and strike partnerships with retailers to court advertisers with the promise of performance and attribution. Publishers want to relabel connected TV as a performance channel, (an analyst) said. But if that happens, she continued, “CTV will lose its cred” among buyers and brands as a viable replacement for legacy linear commercials. Say what you will about linear, but it’s a mass reach vehicle. And if CTV doesn’t provide the same reach opportunity, Wall Street may cool on public companies with a CTV advertising business, (the analyst) said. The reality is, upper-funnel channels, like streaming, have a strong downstream impact on outcomes even if they don’t directly drive a purchase. For example, CTV’s ability to drive mass reach and brand awareness is why more retail media spend is moving to streaming, said Max Willens, a senior analyst at eMarketer, also speaking at Programmatic I/O this week. Last week, I posted about the dominance of a few retail media networks, particularly how a significant portion of retail media investment is concentrated among Amazon, Walmart, and Instacart. These networks excel in justifying always-on investments compared to more episodic promotional strategies. Not only have they proven their ability to capture and convert demand, but they’ve also made impressive strides in demand generation tools. For instance, Amazon Ads now offers highly targeted connected TV programs and enhanced insights into the consumer journey from discovery to conversion. As we look beyond these giants, what strategies should we consider for emerging networks? Is an always-on approach justified, or should we focus on key consumer moments? Retail media ads receive a 183% higher engagement rate than the baseline average across all impressions tracked by DoubleVerify. High engagement comes at the cost of viewability, however, as only 36% of retail media ads placed on retailers’ owned inventory were seen, compared with 73% for audience extension inventory. At Adsta, our CPGs and retailers continue to see the most success from balanced retail media strategies that include both onsite and offsite placements, often from different specialized providers. Instacart and NBCUniversal’s new partnership connects CPG with Streaming and has the potential to change retail. NBCUniversal and Instacart are broadening their existing collaboration to introduce a fresh retail media avenue, allowing Instacart’s CPG advertisers to interact with viewers through NBCU’s streaming and linear TV content. In late 2023, the two companies united to incorporate NBCU’s Peacock streaming platform into the Instacart+ membership package. Now, advertisers gain access to engage consumers through NBCUniversal’s content and analyze campaign effectiveness by leveraging ad exposure and purchase data from Instacart. Tim Castelli, VP of Global Advertising Sales at Instacart, highlighted the forthcoming capability for NBCUniversal advertisers to utilize Instacart’s first-party audience data to enrich their streaming campaigns and validate their impact through closed-loop measurement. This seamless integration presents a mutually beneficial scenario for consumers and brands alike, enabling viewers to encounter a CPG ad on streaming platforms and have the product delivered within an hour via Instacart. The rollout of this offering is slated for Q2 on the streaming service, with plans to extend to linear programming. With this collaboration, CPG brands can engage with the next wave of grocery shoppers in an immersive setting.
