Snag grew their DTC from $0 - Over $30m+ in 3 years. Here’s how they did it: ➤ Problem-Focused Conception While out shopping, Brie realized her tights were slipping down. Growing frustrated, she asked some friends of hers if they experienced something similar. Turns out every single one of her friends had the same issue. This was natural fuel for her to look into things further. ➤ Data = Unfair Advantage Brie didn't have a background in marketing. Instead, her data-oriented mind gave her an advantage by looking at things a little differently. She ran a Google Survey of 3000 women to find out who else struggled to find a pair of tights that fit. The answer? 90% of 3000 people. Bingo. Opportunity validated. The data also showed how: → The market was commoditized → Men made most of the product purchases (Crazy right?) → Most women accepted poor fitting tights as the norm This inspired her to really look into solving this problem, and her search for suppliers began. ➤ Knew the numbers Before launch, Brie’s focus to really get a grip on her numbers really paid off. Since the sales were through DTC, she knew she needed: → 25% of revenue back into marketing → First-order profit → Small seed round to fund initial stock order Armed with the validation from the survey and some strong number-crunching, Snag launched. They cleared £300k/mo in under a year. The emphasis of being profitable from the first order was key to allow her to scale forward and further invest in marketing. ➤ Applied Zero-Party Data & Customer Service This is where Brie’s data-oriented approach really shone a light on how Snag scaled rapidly. The pandemic caused havoc for many brands, including Snag. Over 60% of the business disappeared overnight, and they went into negative. They had Facebook debt that had to be paid. Fast. Or Snag would die. That’s when Brie turned to her customers for answers. Her customers suggested a brilliant offer: 2 tights for the price of one, but the second pair gets sent in 6 months. The offer worked - Snag survived. And eventually thrived. This was a genius idea to help relate to her customers. ➤  Applied the ‘3-Piece’ DTC Law Finally, Brie understood the fundamental law of DTC. → Commitment to customer service → Great product experience → Solve a big problem Since all 3 were checked, the rest was down to semantics, unit economics, and following marketing fundamentals. ➤  Final Thoughts As a data analyst, Brie’s final words of advice were super impactful and really hit home. Yes, data is important, but it’s even more important that each data point is an actual human being, not just a number on a spreadsheet. The best UGC isn’t made by creators you seed products to. It’s made by actual customers. The problem is that brands need a never-ending amount of UGC, and working with creators is super expensive and time-consuming. The good news is that your customers are already creating (free!) content for you – you just need a process to gather it and incentivize it. Right now, most brands I talk to really struggle to get real UGC. They scrape social media to see if they find any content about their brand but it’s either not enough or it doesn’t work as creative for their paid social campaigns. Most of them just give up and pay creators to make them – but it doesn’t have the rawness that UGC should have... and it becomes really expensive. But here’s where I’ve seen on-site communities make a huge difference. When you give your customers a space to share, it becomes so much easier to collect UGC naturally. I love seeing brands use prompts and challenges to incentivize it and make it a fun part of how they interact with you. Couple examples: - Beauty brands can ask customers to upload progress photos and show their results after 30 or 60 days of using a product. - Or artists can run a competition for the best video from the last concert so fans upload clips directly to your site. If you have an on-site community, get creative! There are so many ways to gather, manage, and use UGC once you own that process.

Hot Newsletter Tip #42 Do this simple thing to find sponsors for your newsletter. Read your competitors' newsletters or letters that align with your niche. If they have sponsored ads, you will identify potential sponsorship opportunities. 1. Reach out to those who are a good fit for your newsletter. 2. Tell the sponsor you noticed they had advertised in 'XYZ' newsletter. 3. Give them a few bullet points on your metrics and why your audience would be a good fit for their offers. This is still a volume game (like any outreach), but you'll find it's more effective than a cold pitch. Easy wins.

Running an agency with your spouse can really be a rewarding journey. When I started the agency, Reka Studio, 2 years ago, I knew it’ll be an incredible journey. But it got better after 6 months in when I got my wife’s company to merge with us. Of course, this journey is filled with both immense challenges and rewards. Building a business together as spouses is one of the most difficult yet most gratifying experiences that any two people can share. Which is why usually on The Golden Nuggets Podcast, whenever I get guests who are running their business together with their spouse, I usually ask, “Do you bring business talk to bed?” While there are plenty of challenges, especially maintaining a work-life balance, the rewards are worthwhile. Not many couples can say they spend plenty of time together and this is spending time building something that both of us believe in. Most of the time, the takeaways on the podcast for couples running a business together are the similar. Constant communication is essential. We don't let disagreements fester but have learned to bring in neutral third-party perspectives (the team usually) when needed. At the end of the day, we respect each other as equals, even if our workplace roles differ. We appreciate how our diverse backgrounds complement each other. Does working so closely together test our marriage at times? Absolutely. Is it worth it? Without a doubt. For any entrepreneurial couple considering the leap, buckle up. People’s views on video is f*cked. A good video to them is: • Good music • Quality b-roll/a-roll • Professional editing But, here's what they don’t see • Distribution • Implementation • Content strategy • Audience targeting • Storytelling/scripting What you don't see is what matters. If you have a small audience, don't sell a low-ticket product. This is counterintuitive for most beginners, but low-ticket products are a volume game. If you have a small audience, you can't win a volume game. You're better off starting with a higher-priced product (which requires higher impact and maybe higher touch). These require high trust to sell, but in the beginning, you can lean in and nurture relationships with your small but mighty following. This will fund your early days as you build an audience through high-quality, free content. Eventually, you can play (and win) volume games, too.

**DET#42: Use Emails to Test Ads** Most people test their ads by putting some test budget behind them and seeing what works. But there is a step you can take before that to have a leg up before you launch ads. After you've decided on the different angles your ads might take, write a simple email that promotes your sales page from each angle. So 5 angles = 5 emails. For example, each one might talk about a different feature of your offer or highlight a particular advantage. Then send each one out each day. 1 a day. After those 5 days take a look at the click through rates of those emails and you'll see which angles people likes. This isn't perfect of course because your subscribers are already warm to you and worn from you. Warm: they know you. Worn: they might have seen this offer a lot But the ONE thing that is really important here is to see the angle that was least engaged with. That one didn't resonate very well. And that's great information for you.
