Recently, we’ve been talking a lot about our goal to keep our customers connected to their world no matter where they are. But for some people, it’s harder to stay connected when their devices can’t keep up with demanding tasks. That’s why we’re introducing the only 5G RedCap device that’s available nationwide. With T-Mobile’s 5G SA network and in collaboration with TCL and Qualcomm, we’re powering the only 5G RedCap device in North America, bringing Wi-Fi only or 4G LTE devices onto our 5G network. This is a game-changer for customers who need an affordable entry point into 5G with a more reliable, more secure, and faster experience compared to Wi-Fi and 4G LTE. Why? Because the 5G RedCap can turn almost any USB-C device into a 5G connected device just by plugging it in, without having to upgrade to new devices. Pretty awesome, right? Boost Mobile and Wind River collaborate on the largest CaaS vendor changeover on an Open RAN network! Another great win for #WindRiver, and a moment of reflection. My takes from this success are three. Never give up. My colleagues had a dream (sound familiar?) and pursued it despite headwinds/adversities and delays. Perseverance and constancy gave them (and the client) the sense of being the right choice. Reputation is like a bee; it can fly but can sting you. An incumbent position is not a fixed status, it is not granted, and you need to maintain it and gain it every time. Challenge yourself. You can be Goliath tomorrow so, don’t forget you were David. Focus on what’s next, your client, be grounded, and don’t let the other determine who you are. Well done team! #WeAreWindRiver #StarlingX #CoreToEdge 🔗Learn more: https://ow.ly/iVMl30sIwTn

Verizon is nearing a deal to acquire Frontier Communications, according to The Wall Street Journal. A play for Frontier Internet would fit into a fiber/mobile convergence strategy at Verizon and possibly spark more M&A for fiber assets among Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

Johan von Heijne is Communications Manager, Northern & Central Europe at Ericsson. He joined the company in 2022 having previously worked at Weber Shandwick. Johan is based in Sweden. “Family life is full-on: I have twin sons aged five and a two year old daughter. Making it work is all about being open: I will tell a colleague ‘my son is here’ if I’m on a call and a child is around. I’ll admit that working full-time with three kids is always a challenge. So you have to think in advance and acknowledge that things will always change. You need to be super-organised and very adaptive to deal with the juggle. On a Sunday you can look ahead and plan the week but then on Monday one of the kids gets a high fever and it alters everything. So you sit down with your partner and adapt. Which meetings are most important or what commitments can you drop? Perhaps my mother will help for an hour or so. It’s like a puzzle. It works out but sometimes it’s hard. We both work full-time and have help from our parents. I realise that’s a privilege. It also helps being in Sweden which is a very progressive and supportive country for parents with generous parental leave and measures in place. Ericsson’s a supportive environment. If I have a sick child at home, colleagues or bosses just say I hope they feel better soon. But you still have to do the work. I feel the pressure! It’s a hard equation to pull off. Having kids makes you extra efficient because you have to focus on getting things done. There’s no choice. I put an out-of-office message on when a child is poorly and needs my attention, although I still find time here and there to work. I think it’s good practice. You’re being honest, telling it like it is. And it gives you space to take care of your child and an understanding that you might not be available all day. Recently I had an occasion where I did a Teams meeting with a child on my lap. He was sick and needed comforting. But it was an important meeting I didn’t want to miss. When leaders are open - and vulnerable - about their family situation it gives us all a great example for how to be at work. Recently I supported our CU head Nora on a keynote she delivered at a Women in Tech conference. She told a story about a business trip where she worried about her daughter at home. I already knew Nora was an open leader, but hearing her story reminded me of the importance of role models. A leader standing up in front of 2,000 people talking about the realities of being a working parent - that’s powerful. Of course parenting changes everything. It takes a while to accept you only have so many hours in the day. It probably took me 12 months to accept that. You need to be grounded. But I love being a Dad and am super proud of it!” #ParentsAtEricsson

What a phenomenal week the last one turned out to be! You know how we all try to do our bit for the planet? Like unplugging our chargers or flipping the light switch off as we leave a room? Well, our team has taken those everyday energy-saving habits and scaled them big time. And this led to Ericsson’s eco-friendly innovation being honored with the Green Future Best Practice Award at the Deutsche Telekom Campus Fair 2024! 🌍🏆 The journey that brought us here was a team effort between our MELA SCR team and the local business team on the ground, particularly the Deutsche Telekom Key Account Manager, who all poured their expertise into crafting an award submission that shone a light on our collaborative spirit and innovation. Together, they crunched the numbers and showcased how Deutsche Telekom’s network in Germany is making leaps in capacity and energy performance, all while lowering its carbon footprint with our new energy-efficient radios. We're talking a massive 60.8 GWh energy saved annually, and a reduction of 4,290 tons of CO2e. This is what modernization with a conscience looks like, and it's helping DT sprint towards their ambitious Net Zero goal by 2040. But this isn't just about celebrating a win. It's about setting the stage for what's next. The innovation we've highlighted here is ready to be rolled out to other markets, driving sustainability and business benefits far and wide. Here's to our team's hard work and to all the exciting, earth-friendly advancements on the horizon! #Sustainability #GreenFuture #Innovation #TeamEricsson #NetZero #EnergyEfficiency #DeutscheTelekom #ClimateAction Stefan Growe | Alina Claire Ostenda | Christian Francke | Cornelia Izquierdo-B. | Souleiman Midani | Yasser Ayad | LOUISE HUGHES | Marisol Soltero | Rory Moore | Cordula Knüppel | Martin Ostermeier | Jan Thünnesen

Always scary listening to yourself, especially when "swearing in church" 😊. This is quite enjoyable since we are just speaking - ZERO corporate messaging! At least until we get right to the end when I couldn't help myself. Rakuten has a very clear customer promise... “We're trying to sell technology to people who don't care. Why are we doing that? Why are we screaming from the rooftops that you can get 5G here? Nobody cares, nobody cares, because it makes no difference to them. If we were selling hotel rooms, we'd sell a hotel room for the same price in Manhattan as we were in Oklahoma City. I mean, it's, we don't, I think we've lost touch as an industry with what we need to have as a customer promise. I think initially, because our customer promise was so tied to technology, it was a lot easier. So do voice everywhere, we're building networks that do mobile voice. So that's really simple. We've got disintermediated from the customer experience with smartphones. That's why the app economy took off and 4G was pulled through. It didn't lead it. It pulled through. We were hoping, by the way, as an industry, that someone invents something that pulls us through again. But (the fundamental problem) we haven't got a customer promise. Now, let me flip to my day job. And this conversation has had nothing to do with my day job, which is why I've enjoyed it so much. Rakuten has a very clear customer promise... Lumen: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Lumen is enjoying a Renaissance under new CEO, Kate Johnson. She recognized the hard truth that Lumen had too much debt and managed to sell the South American and European assets above fair value to Colt and one other player. Less widely known is that Lumen sold off its ILEC business to Brightspeed for $7.5 billion. In addition, she is focusing on fibre-to-the-home deployment as opposed to trying to protect legacy twisted copper wire assets. Many telecom CEOs are unable to make the hard choice of cannibalizing or selling slow growth PSTN services like POTs and DSL in order to deploy new, technologically more advanced services. But the stock market approves the strategy as far sighted. Furthermore, Johnson has recognized that Lumen should finally integrate its five networks into one. These five networks reflect purchases of distressed assets that previous CEOs made over 15 years ago, including Qwest Communications, Time Warner Telecom, Global Crossing, and others. Integration is estimated to slash network expenses by a billion USD a year. If Lumen has integrated these assets in a timely fashion, Lumen's shareholders would be about $15 billion dollars richer today. It would still have its international assets and be a global player. Kate Johnson is making Lumen's focus the AI industry. This is good marketing and investors are likely to buy it short term. Nonetheless, AI has all the marking of a gigantic bubble as the revenue potential of generative AI is limited and certainly not great enough to justify the massive investments in the sector. Large language models are simply gigantic nonlinear statistical models that ape whatever language samples are used to estimate them. Reasoning ability is extremely limited. If a model was estimated using Donald Trump's tweets, it would insist that the 2020 election was stolen and that he is the most oppressed man on the planet. This so-called AI is basically regurgitation. It will be sensible if trained on the Wall Street and New York Times or downright crazy if trained on the proceedings of the Flat Earth Society. It is likely Lumen will benefit from being a partner of the Digital Titans, but I suspect the growth benefit will peter out in a few years when AI undergoes its own crisis just like the bursting of the dotcom bubble in 2000. I would focus more on reducing head count as transport and transit services can be profitable, but only if the company is lean and mean. I wish Lumen the best of luck. #lumen #renaissance #integration #leverage #katejohnson #ai

Ericsson unveils a new #ConsumerLab research report that highlights a powerful trend: #5G is transforming event experiences, with a 20% higher share of 5G users reporting satisfaction with their connectivity compared to 4G users. The report also reveals that users are becoming increasingly discerning about their connections, prioritizing app quality and reliability 10 times more than speed alone. This shift in user preferences correlates with evolving traffic patterns at events, where data use now peaks dynamically with live-streaming and content sharing – levels only high-capacity 5G networks can support smoothly. As demand continues to grow, attendees are even willing to pay extra for a seamless experience, which is a good example of why high-performance programmable networks is the future. By enabling differentiated connectivity, operators can create tailored network experiences for different user needs – even in the most demanding scenarios – thereby opening up new avenues to monetize their networks’ capabilities. Rakuten Symphony is so appreciative to AT&T for being included in its network simplification transformation program. Thank you to all the AT&T executives who have given us this chance to be part of an industry-changing program. Mike Dano's article captures so many aspects of what is required to be successful in an undertaking like this. It starts with the fundamentals of using different words to describe what is being done. "I think the word 'cell site' goes away," AT&T's Todd Zeiler said. "I think this pivots to a world of CU, DU, RU. Servers and access points." Before we built mobile networks. Today we start building distributed data center operations where the primary user is a mobile network. We see so many parallels between how AT&T is approaching this and how Rakuten Symphony already approached it. The hope is we can discover an industry blueprint that can make sense for the whole of telecom to be able to follow and accelerate the change to being a truly software-driven cloud-native operation. From Mike Dano's below article when describing the vendors involved "One is Japan's Rakuten Symphony. According to The Mobile Network, AT&T counts roughly 7,000 users of Rakuten Symphony's Site Manager software within its own and its contractor construction teams. The software automates parts of AT&T's site deployment processes."
