Too expensive. How do you find the balance between developing a porridge product that is better tasting, better for you and better for the planet? AND easier on your wallet. 75% of consumers are actively trying to make environmentally conscious choices , BUT price remains a significant barrier, with many consumers finding sustainably labelled products too expensive* This is the challenge we are up against right now. We want to make the breakfast occasion better, but we also need to run a business that hits sales targets and profitability. We could do things the easy way and develop breakfast products that use cheap, unsustainable, unhealthy ingredients, mark up our prices and pocket all the profits. But we are not a big corporate giant that dominates our breakfast cereal aisles. The lab grown proteins, meat and substitute products industry was doomed to fail from the get go… Not only is it ridiculously expensive to manufacture between the high tech equipment and the high labor costs, but the health implications of eating this Sci-FI protein are likely to be disastrous. This is an interesting one from Its Fresh and their brand Rypen. Since joining the company, I’ve learnt so much about fruit, waste, and the global supply chain. It gives an entirely different perspective on what we are asking of supermarkets as consumers, and how that impacts the world.
