Hot off the press from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting 🔥 Does non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increase the risk for pancreatic cancer? This study says yes! After propensity score matching for confounding variables, the 5-year risk of developing PC was higher in NAFLD cohort (risk ratio, RR 2.18, 95% CI 1.56-3.03) compared with the control group. Overall, 5-year mortality was higher in the NAFLD cohort (8.2% vs 6.6%, RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.16-1.37). #pancreas #asco24

He also emphasized the need to ensure benefits of Large Language Models (LLMs) in medical implementations. Is the increased cardiovascular risk in #SouthAsians genetically driven? My patients and family tell me so. DNA is not destiny. I agree, however, that there are genetic pathways implicated in baseline cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes and lipid abnormalities, for example. Check out a new JAMA Viewpoint article on state biomarker testing laws that I co-authored with UCSF colleagues Grace Lin, MD, MAS, and Kathryn Phillips, PhD, of UCSF's Center for Translational and Policy Research on Precision Medicine (TRANSPERS). I've reposted TRANSPERS news release below. MON MAY 13, 2024 In the JAMA article, The State of State Biomarker Testing Insurance Coverage Laws, by Lin et. al., the authors tackle the complicated topic of states legislating access to medical care. In response to perceived barriers to access to care, states have enacted legislation to mandate terms and conditions of insurance coverage for a variety of circumstances, such as cancer screening and mental health treatment parity. Recently there have been increasing numbers of states that have passed legislation mandating that insurers cover “biomarker testing”. This review of legislation from 15 states mandating coverage of biomarker testing finds that their impact may be limited by their lack of reach and implementation challenges. While these laws attempt to expand access to coverage, that may not always be the case, since more than 50% of the population may not be covered by legislative mandates governing insurance coverage. Additionally, such insurance mandates may not affect inequities in access. Finally, there is little guidance for implementation in the legislation. The authors conclude that current laws are likely to have limited effect, particularly concerning improving health equity, and additional approaches will likely be needed to improve patient access and outcomes. The AMIA Natural Language Processing Working Group will feature Dr. Yonghui Wu, the inventor of the largest clinical LLM GatorTron, with the talk titled “Prevails and Mirages of Large Language Models in Clinical NLP” on Tuesday August 13, 2024 at noon EST. Here’s the abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have profoundly changed clinical natural language processing (NLP) and brought substantial opportunities and challenges for artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. LLMs almost become a unified solution for clinical NLP, yet current findings are mixed with prevails and mirages. On one side, LLMs have been reported to be able to pass several professional exams, yet there is limited evidence supporting the benefit of LLMs to many classic clinical NLP tasks. This talk will introduce the technologies powering LLMs, overview the recent prevails, and examine the mirages in the hype of LLM magic. Based on the experience in developing two clinical LLMs in the clinical domain, including GatorTron and GatorTronGPT, this talk will provide insight into the potential application of LLMs for clinical NLP and healthcare.
