The 2024 Application Trends Survey has been released by the Graduate Management Admission Council™ (GMAC™), and GME professionals and The Wall Street Journal alike have taken note. For all intents and purposes, the state of graduate management education is strong. Notably, full-time, in-person programs are increasing in popularity as students focus on the program experience rather than just the credential. This year is already turning out to be a banner year at the College of Charleston School of Business, with record application numbers for our One-Year MBA. In a recent blog post from Everspring, they reveal that students are increasingly in short supply. Everspring also shared that while these students may be fewer in quantity, when it comes to quantity they’re more "discerning, sophisticated, and selective in their higher education decision-making." In order to help colleges and universities better retain students, they consolidated the successes they've noticed into 5 key trends that higher education marketers and leaders should not only be aware of, but should implement: 1️⃣ Higher education prospects are behaving more like consumers. 2️⃣ Prospective students are searching for degrees, not specific universities. 3️⃣ Online education is empowering regional schools to compete on a national stage. 4️⃣ Full-funnel data integration has become critical for effective enrollment marketing. 5️⃣ Schools are upgrading their digital marketing to attract the best students. As an instructor of entrepreneurs at Rice University, in one of my classes I have my students debate from thier seats whether everyone should learn Python or at least a fundamental programming language in middle school. The answer is usually a resounding yes! As the President of the Parent Teacher Association at my sons' school, we tackle this issue regularly, and 3D modeling has also come up in our discussions. My sons, who are now 10 and 12, have been learning Scratch, Python, JavaScript, and various modeling software. They use these skills to design and execute programming projects and tangible items on our 3D printer at home. It's incredible to see how these tools foster creativity and problem-solving skills at such a young age... and one is leaning into architecture hard because of it. Jennifer recently posted (shared at the end of this) about the impact of early exposure to 3D design and entrepreneurship in education. I couldn't agree more with her perspective. Introducing these skills early can shape career paths and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset. Plus, it's just plain fun for the kids! At my son's school, we're always looking for ways to better utilize our technology and curriculum... and seeing schools lead the way with robust entrepreneurial programs is inspiring. Most colleges are facing financial headwinds right now, although I will note that colleges at risk of closing often cannot participate in bond markets and are outside of the scope of credit ratings agencies. Bank lines of credit are often their only resource.

Higher Ed is in dire need of a significant transformation to bring back the fundamental values of free speech, academic excellence, and critical thinking. The issue of "deplatforming" is a pressing concern, with multiple instances occurring to me personally, including a recent experience two months ago at one of our prominent universities in Minnesota. Data from FIRE (https://lnkd.in/gt9e7her) reveals a striking shift in deplatforming attempts, with an average of eight incidents per year between 1998 and 2012 from the political left, escalating to an average of 48 attempts annually since 2013. This trend highlights the growing activism and coordinated behavior on college campuses, emphasizing the urgency for change in the higher education landscape. Leadership matters.

I am often asked “what type of budget model works best for universities?” This is the wrong question, or at least incorrectly cast. To get to the right questions, and the needed answers for any decision, we first need some history, some present-day context, and some insight into WHY, WHEN, and HOW new budget models are designed and implemented at universities. We also need to understand the organizational, operational, and decision-making dynamics that characterize much of US higher education today. Private Regional Colleges Will Face Stiff Competition From Public Institutions, Moody’s Predicts These challenges will be particularly pronounced in the Midwest and Northeast, where the pool of traditional college-age students is expected to shrink. • Private regional colleges with small student bodies and high acceptance rates will face increasingly stiff competition from public institutions as higher ed braces for widespread demographic challenges, according to a new analysis from Moody’s Ratings. • These issues will be particularly pronounced in the Midwest and Northeast, where the fight for a shrinking pool of students is expected to heat up. Moody’s analysts predicted higher ed enrollment would plummet in these two regions in the coming years, citing a 2020 report from the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education. • Driving up costs, small private colleges have increased spending on employee salaries and student wellness services since the start of the pandemic, Moody’s said. Analysts also noted that “maintaining small class sizes has become more expensive.” The number of high school graduates is expected to sharply fall beginning next year due to a drop in birth rates during the Great Recession. The decline in traditional-aged college students means institutions — especially tuition-dependent ones — will be forced to adapt. Moody’s analysts examined colleges rated by the firm that had student acceptance rates of 60% or more and student bodies of 3,000 or less. The financial well-being of these institutions depends heavily on enrollment, with an average of 71% of their budgets relying on tuition and auxiliary revenue in fiscal 2023, the firm said. “Exacerbating the race for enrollment are the many strong state institutions that also compete for students in these regions, often with much lower tuition costs than what the private universities can offer,” Moody’s said. In addition to large public universities, highly selective colleges and institutions with niche focuses will also remain in demand, they said. Many smaller colleges are turning to strategies like enhancing academic counseling and aligning programs with workforce demands to stay competitive. “However, these strategies often carry significant financial and execution risks,” Moody’s said, noting that small colleges may drain their endowments to make such changes. “Further, desired outcomes will be increasingly difficult to achieve as student market risks escalate.” Some small colleges could have an edge in demonstrating their value. The higher ed sector more broadly is also defending the value of a college degree. Some 57% of 18- to 30-year-olds without college diplomas — an increasingly important pool of potential students — said a four-year degree is a good or excellent value, according to a 2023 survey commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That’s down from 60% who said the same the year prior.

College Closure Alert: The higher education landscape is shifting dramatically. In just the first 9 months of 2024, 28 degree-granting institutions have closed - nearly double the total closures from 2023. Key findings from The Hechinger Report: a. Nearly 300 colleges and universities offering associate degrees or higher closed between 2008-2023. b. 60% of closures were for-profit institutions. c. Ross School of Business), is visiting the Marketing at UNC Kenan-Flagler at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School today and tomorrow. This feels like the perfect time to highlight our recent article on instrumental variables, featured in 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘑𝘔𝘙. As social scientists, answering the ‘why’ question is crucial to advancing knowledge. For many business challenges, the instrumental variable (IV) approach is often the best—sometimes the only—method to estimate causal effects. However, identifying and validating strong instruments is a significant challenge. We hope our article will help researchers better assess the quality of their instruments in establishing causality.
