When I started this project, there was a collection of PC-SAS datasets obtained from production Army databases systems, as well as data reporting efforts, from different organizations within the Army and the Department of Defense. These datasets were focused on active duty Army Soldiers. It included many useful datasets for epidemiology and public health, including clinical encounter data (SIDR, SADR, etc.), reporting datasets from the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) such as CTS…

These datasets were focused on active duty Army Soldiers. It included many useful datasets for epidemiology and public health, including clinical encounter data (SIDR, SADR, etc.), reporting datasets from the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) such as CTS (deployment) and census (Master Personnel and Transaction). We used it for several epidemiologic investigations, but found it would be easier to use if migrated to a platform other than PC-SAS. I am unaware of the current status of the TAIHOD, but I believe the Army saw value in it and intends to carry it on.

In 2004, the Florida State Department of Elder Affairs had 15 established memory disorder clinics for the purposes of providing diagnosis and treatment for Floridians with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. This was the result of a law passed 20 years prior establishing these clinics. However, the law also called for a database to track the patients at these clinics. When the Byrd Institute, a research non-profit, was founded by the State of Florida in 2003-2004, building this database became a task assigned to the Byrd Institute. I was the director of this project, called BIRDII. When I left, we had networked all 15 clinics and they were all doing useful data entry and reporting to the State. Further, they all used a common lexicon, legal and regulatory mechanisms were in place, and the data entry and reporting did not hamper and often improved clinic operation. Before 2004, two different full-scale efforts had been made by previous teams to complete this project. Ours was the first one that succeeded, and we were able to do it in a matter of a few years.
