I hear a lot about bots and bad respondents in market research. I'm a big proponent of taking respondent quality seriously because it can impact certain types of studies systematically (e.g., segmentations). We made an automated bad respondent detector that looks for internal consistency in survey responses. The last study we used it on it only detected only 1 completely random respondent (e.g., a bot answering completely randomly). But it still detected 364 bad responses (20% of the data) using a more sophisticated method. We detect based on a combination of low internal consistency in responses and low variation. (All of this is in addition to traditional detection methods like speeding.) For example, someone answering 2s and 3s for everything with no discernable pattern would get caught. This is respondent behaviour that would avoid traditional algorithms for bad data quality. I think either our field partners are catching all the random bots, OR the bots are "smart enough" to answer like lazy humans who use subsets of scales and anchoring. The 20% bad respondents are also likely to be many real humans who aren’t paying much attention. This figure may be conservative, but you have to tweak detectors to be the right balance between false positives (throwing away real respondents) vs. false negatives (not throwing away a bot). But it’s interesting that >99% of what we’re catching is due to behaviour that would avoid less sophisticated methods. Either humans evolved from straightlining to minimal (but random) variation or bots have evolved from fully random variation to minimal (but random) variation. (Our tool uses a bunch of past datasets, both real and synthetically created, extracts features that are markers of internal consistency, and uses a neural network on top of all that to make a final prediction of good/bad respondent. Internal consistency is a relative measure and is derived automatically study to study based on available data. No Qualibee or rugby post today... Just sharing something I very recently learned about due to content around Veterans Day. The VA has an AI initiative going back several years, and they maintain a continually updated inventory list on their website. It’s amazing to see just how many different ways they’re using it to meet veterans’ unique needs. These aren't the case studies we usually chat about on here – they’re making a tangible difference for individuals. Some neat examples: Antimicrobial Resistance Detection: AI-driven tools identify resistant bacteria more quickly, supporting infection control and patient care. Suicidal Ideation Detection: The SoKat Suicidal Ideation Engine uses AI to analyze veterans' feedback and identify crisis risks, helping mental health teams intervene when it matters most. T-SQL Optimization: On the technical side, they’re even using AI to optimize SQL queries, ensuring data operations run smoothly across the VA’s systems. Votes cast- futures shift Whispers of change fill the air New dawn's light appears #fraikufriday To the surprise of no one, the 2024 election is filled with incredibly dynamic forces.  If you're looking at polling data from last week, you're effectively looking at data from last decade.  You need an up to date understanding of the American electorate, and you need to be able to understand how to put the right message in front of the right person at the right time.

It’s not quite Father’s Day yet – so why the old throwback photo? Today Ipsos North America published my latest paper, which starts with a lesson from my Dad: When you have a big question about what’s going on in the world around you, remember to “follow the money”. Meaning, follow the trail of money and it will eventually lead you back to why the decision was made. It’s super advice, which I see not taken time and time again working in the world of advertising. Lots of people following their guts, the ego in the room, or the click data to make decisions on which ads to pursue & invest in. Recently there’s been a lot of discussion here on LinkedIn about the value of advertising research. It’s been driven by a few very loud industry voices who likely have not spent any time looking at advertising research methods in the last decade and spout off their perspectives with little to no data or evidence to back it up. I’m not a professor or a best selling author, but I have lived and breathed advertising research for nearly 17 years now. I have been involved first hand in the 3rd party validations of our work to business results. And I’m here to tell you that in a world where everything feels complex, unmeasurable, and unreliable – our research with the real humans that experience your advertising – has huge returns on research investment. Insights leads, Marketers, and Creatives can obtain larger budgets and influence if we follow the money by: 1. At a bare minimum, using research to ensure you're not airing poor ads 2. Getting to stronger creative with less time and investment through early stage research 3. I get pitched often for survey software. We use Decipher at OvationMR and have built a large number of customizations for our clients over the years. Out of curiosity, I started reviewing survey software options recently and couldn’t believe the sheer number of platforms—over 700 listed on Capterra alone! I've used perhaps a dozen, starting in the early years of online research. Today, there is no shortage of choices and options. For a new user, perhaps a corporate researcher who wants to bring a survey platform in-house, it can be overwhelming. The offerings represent a range of needs, from basic polling tools to advanced platforms suited for complex marketing research. It is important to align product features with your research objectives, as well as with your skill set.
