Agile Estimating: Guess what? Just because you are working in an Agile way, doesn't mean you don't have to estimate your work 🙂 The difference in Agile estimating is we'll often use more collaborative ways, and ways that keep your team psychologically safe. "Wide Band Delphi" estimating uses an anonymous approach, so your boss can't influence your estimate, and you can give a true number. It gives everyone a voice and helps the team come to a consensus. Planning Poker is a variation of this. Plus it reduces "anchoring" to other people's estimates by revealing them all at once. We use Relative Estimating because we understand that while we need an idea of how big something is, it will never be absolutely perfect. We can still get a relative idea of how big or small it might be.

I am a huge fan of Maarten Dalmijn and highly respect his opinions and love his most recent book. That said, I struggle with this idea and would love feedback on it. My $0.02 - I also know that more and more companies want all three locked, and quality isnt an optional flex - its a given. They want to know what they are going to get, when they will get it and how much it is going to cost. And in 2025, my bet is that will become more of the norm. I almost have a feeling like the Golden Days of flexible scope are numbered. They days of "let's fix the date and give you however much money you need, and you just build what you can and whatever you get done in that time, it'll be the most important stuff. And all the rest will just float." I think those are in the rearview mirror in some regards. So the question for us is how do we be agile when all 4 of these things are locked? I think that's the question of 2025 and the foreseeable future.

Different types of product roadmap PMs use. 1. Feature Roadmap This is good for letting stakeholders know about various feature release dates. This representation is good for stakeholders who want to be updated about release dates. View types of roadmap in this beautiful slide deck created by Product School 2. Outcome based Roadmap An outcome-based roadmap is aligned to goals that you want to achieve. It is useful if you can not commit to exact timelines. It is also useful if you don't want to commit to timelines to your stakeholders and want to be questioned on it later. 3. Agile Roadmap This approach focusses on quick releases and prioritizes shipping code at regular intervals. This is more agile way to do things. However, one of the drawback of this roadmap is lack of visibility on priorities, which might result in missing on tasks that create impact. 4. Visual Roadmap Visual roadmap is very useful in representing strategic or broad initiatives that the product is going to take. This format is quite useful for aligning senior stakeholders and executives. ⭐️ PRODUCT MANAGERS NAVIGATING WITH THEIR COMPASS OF SUCCESS The roles of Product Manager (PM) and Product Owner (PO) are often used interchangeably, but they serve distinct functions. 💡 While the Product Manager is focused on the strategic direction, market alignment, and long-term success of the product, the Product Owner works closely with development teams to execute that vision by managing the product backlog and ensuring features are delivered. 💡 While product managers and product owners and have different roles, they both play an important part in the product development process. 💡 The right person for the job depends on the nature and scale of the project, as well as the skills and responsibilities involved. 💡 Also smaller organsiations may not always have the luxury of having two different people dedicated to each role, and may need to have one person fulfil both responsibilities. 💡 Product Managers (PMs) encounter various challenges when driving product success. 💡 Without a clear vision, teams lack direction so PMs develop a detailed product roadmap aligned with business goals and communicate it frequently. 💡 Balancing demands from customers, executives, and teams is difficult so they set realistic expectations early and provide consistent updates to keep everyone aligned. 💡Competing priorities can shift focus so PMs use frameworks like RICE or MoSCoW to prioritize based on impact and value. ] 💡Limited resources can slow progress so they focus on delivering MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) and iterate based on user feedback to maximize efficiency. 💡 Aligning various teams can be tricky so PMs hold regular cross-functional meetings to ensure clear communication and unified goals. 💡Accumulating tech debt can hinder future product growth so they alocate time in the product backlog to address technical debt alongside new features. 💡 Rapid shifts in trends can disrupt plans so PMs stay agile by conducting regular market analysis and adapt strategies when needed. 💡 It’s easy to get sidetracked by short-term wins so they balance quick wins with strategic milestones to ensure long-term success. 💡 Conflicting internal priorities can stall progress so PMs build relationships with key stakeholders and align product goals with broader organisational objectives. 💡 It can be tough to get insights that drive decisions so they use analytics, interviews, and surveys to gather feedback and ensure it informs the product roadmap.
