What are some effective ways to involve customers in your corporate social responsibility initiatives?
I agree, but in my experience, the co-benefits are often heavily weighed toward the organization. I find it more impactful if you can create situations where benefits can occur based on current behavior with a sliding scale of benefits. For example, I ran a campaign where we matched a donation to a non-profit based on existing customer behaviors. We were able to get further participation and donate even more because our customers wanted to do more than they already did since there was an immediate reward.

What are some effective ways to involve customers in your corporate social responsibility initiatives?
I believe that your customer’s success is your company’s success. It should be celebrated, and often. I’ve always enjoyed businesses that recognize my anniversary as a customer or my birthday. It shows that *I* matter, and not just my money. When celebrating customers, I like telling their story like they are a hero being highlighted in the news. What problem did they have? How did they overcome it? What was the end result? Other customers will see themselves in those shoes and your current customers will take pride in their accomplishments. It’s a win-win-win-for your customer, future customers, and your business.

What are some effective ways to involve customers in your corporate social responsibility initiatives?
In my experience, organizations struggle with identifying their own values. Making sure the company values are well known and documented is the first step to aligning with your customers. Go around your company and ask employees at all levels, “what are our company values?”. I would bet today that you get a range of answers. When it comes to aligning with customers, companies need to communicate through words and actions what their values are first. Then, the focus groups can be about “what do these values mean to you?,” to gain further insights.
