AOV, CAC, MER, and CLV can be misleading. Avoid the average trap. Suppose your store number looks like this - AOV: $55 CAC: $20 Now, with fix $15 COGS & $10 Shipping $55 - $20 - ($15+$10) = $10 in profit You are making a $10 profit on each purchase. But in reality, 70% of orders look like - Order value: $45 CAC: $25 With fixed COGs & shipping $45 - $25 - ($15+$10) = $5 in loss So you are making $5 in loss with the majority of your orders. Why are averages looking good? It's mostly because - * Organic or direct traffic sources * High ticket orders * Repeat purchases * Word-of-mouth marketing * Email marketing Blended metrics will not help unless you are selling a single product on a single channel to a single type of user. The key to profitable growth lies in segmented metrics. Segment each important metric at -  Products, Channels and Customer level. Once you start breaking up the blended metrics in each bucket, you will start seeing the leaks in the bucket. Remove products, change budgets, and focus on different segments. Here's a playbook we're running to generate leads for a hemp based company that focuses on B2B: 1) Google ads for high intent keywords to capture existing demand. This is usually the quickest path to leads. We use Google Search Console + AlsoAsked to build a bank of keywords. We use a clean domain to build a landing page that's devoid of much specific language, avoids using trigger keywords etc. We setup conversion tracking using GTM & GA4; and then setup a webhook in their CRM to ensure tracked correctly at the contact level Once we start to see which keywords are bringing the clicks/conversions; we'll invest more time into building out custom landing pages for those keywords to more closely align with search intent. We also setup a few retargeting campaigns 2) We used Google and a 3rd party data provider (that uses SIC codes) to identify & build a targeted account list For a more niche business (with nuance b/t states & their regulatory components) doing some of this manually is really only way Once we have the target companies; we use Apollo.io to enrich the data. From there we will be doing a few things: - Outbound email campaigns to share helpful content; we'll run this through Instantly.ai - Adding accounts into LinkedIn to build lookalike audiences & run a few campaigns to distribute content & share some brand awareness ads + sprinkle in a few silly meme ads for attention. This will be a small budget of $1-2K per month given the small TAM - Setting up 2 direct mail campaign tests. 1 will be a letter style mailing & the other will be a postcard. Both will have diff offers; with some tangible / no-cost value prop to the target account - Working w/ internal sales team to tee up cold calls using enriched data; CTA will be checking on the mailer & offering free value adds 3) Setup new website visitor ID from Instantly.ai on their main URL; and then will be building a funnel of ID > outbound using their tool to ideally send more targeted / personalized outreach based on intent. Once you start operating at a certain level, you can’t help but wonder if you’re actually catching and organizing ALL of your data from sales and events happening on your site Especially those coming from your Meta ads. Chances are… you’re not. Post IOS update, we were having an absurd amount of our conversions just “missed” by the native tracking we relied on. Listen We all know that in this game, every single metric needs to be accounted for if you don’t want 1,000 different fires to put out in the long term. And you don’t ever want to be in that spot. The first thing you need to do is identify exactly where, how, and how much data you’re missing So here’s how you can conduct a quick self-audit of your ad account to find that info: 1. Identify how you’ve set up your tracking First things first, you need to know and understand how your data is being tracked, collected, etc. 2. Start crunching the numbers Let’s say that last week you sold 2,000 products But when you look at your data on Meta, it only shows 1,800. That means that Facebook missed 200 of your sales… And that’s a big problem. So how do you fix it? You can do one of two ways: Start from the ground up. Pull everything apart, find where your holes are, and spend the time and energy fixing them. We ran down this route, and all we did was learn that we had no clue what we were supposed to be doing OR how we could even start to fix it. Then there's option 2 - hire a ‘construction crew’ to come in and fix everything from the ground up. Is it more efficient? Absolutely. We’ve been working with our own ‘construction crew’ for about 3 years now, and I wish we had started sooner. They gave us a LOT more data than we’d otherwise have, which in turn means we can make a lot better decisions with our business And… they tell us immediately when our tracking is broken, isn’t working properly, etc. Facebook doesn’t tell you this, Shopify doesn’t tell you this, etc etc. If they did, you wouldn’t be having the tracking issues you’re having right now, would you? Anyway - here’s what I mean by better, more profitable decisions: When you’re running ads on Facebook, you’re going to exclude returning audiences from your ads. However - it’s not always going to exclude 100%. Which is why you need a construction crew. For us - it’s Elevar. We can ensure that we’re only sending new customers back to Meta so that it can optimize based on that info ALONE. Which in turn allows us to optimize on a much more precise level. (And this is just one use case - Imagine how many we’ve had in 3 years) I could spend all day talking about the different uses and benefits of using a tool like Elevar - but I’ll get to the point. Am I a #proudpartner? Yes - but I wouldn’t have been using them for the last 3 years if what they do wasn’t extremely beneficial for us. And they’re helping me hang onto the few non-gray hairs I have left, so I’ll take it as an added bonus.

DTC growth advice that doesn't work for fashion brands Part 3: Influencer Seeding The "best practice": message 500 influencers a week to gift 50-100/week to get 5-10 pieces of content a week. Does it work for fashion brands? This strategy works to the extent that your fashion brand is willing to “go broad” with influencer selection. Fashion and beauty brands basically invented modern influencer marketing. The influencers in this space (micro and macro) are more clued in than someone who started a TikTok account 6 months ago. Basically, if a creator has more sophisticated taste and has worked with fashion brands before, you’re unlikely to get a gushing 30 second testimonial/product try-on for free. You might get a quick static IG story, or an untagged feed post where your product is peeking out from beneath 2-3 other brands. But it’s unlikely the creator will let you repurpose this content as an ad without compensation. They know the game. Sometimes you'll get lucky, and the influencer will genuinely love your product. But your hit rate on usable content is going to be a lot lower than a snack brand reaching out to a broad, diverse list of “newbie” creators. Also: your impact will be diluted further if you don't have a focused product strategy behind the gifting campaign. A few scattered hits on a few scattered products does not create a memorable impression. What to do instead:  If your brand is willing to reach out to influencers who are younger and/or part-time creators, you can take the gift for content approach. But if you’re trying to cultivate an air of exclusivity this approach can dilute your brand. If you want to plug into the network of “fashion authority”, you’ll have to do at least one of the following: 1. Pay to play. Pay fashion creators/influencers to wear your product and/or create content around it. This can be very effective with the right influencer/market fit. But it’s expensive, and doesn't always feel genuine. 2. Cultivate genuine relationships with up-and-coming creators, media, stylists. Substack fashion writers are the “alpha” here at the moment. These folks are always looking for new brands, but this is a “top of funnel” strategy with a longer payoff period. The right PR agency is the shortcut. 3. Join a popular fashion affiliate network and offer big commissions for new customer sales on certain items. You’ll need to offer 40-50% to get attention. This + gifting can get folks to post about you. You also need to determine your goal. If it's near-term sales and customer acquisition, keep the scope of your gifting fairly narrow. The right influencer strategy can create a “hot item” out of thin air, but you won’t accomplish that if you’re sending different product to every creator.

Influencer Marketing isn't complicated, but it is challenging. Here's some examples why: - Influencer Rates starting at ridiculous prices - Agents constantly redlining your contracts. - Influencers NOT following brand guidelines - Following up with influencers to post -Finding quality influencers who align with the brand. All of this takes tons of TIME. If you don't have a dedicated team member to do this, then outsource it.

Because every affiliate video requires a sample.
