In today’s episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of speaking with William Lyman, better known as Bill, the founder and CEO of Breakwave Energy. Bill's company is tackling one of the most persistent challenges in renewable energy: harnessing the power of ocean waves. Wave energy presents a unique opportunity in the renewable energy landscape. Unlike solar and wind, which are limited by weather conditions and time of day, waves are a constant force driven by distant storms and the natural movement of the ocean. Bill explained this key advantage, saying, "Waves are driven by 1000-mile-away storms, and they break all day long, all night. Water is 800 times more dense than air. So, you always grab more energy from waves, but you have to do it in a way that's cost-effective." However, harnessing wave energy is no easy feat. The ocean's harsh environment can destroy equipment, making it challenging to maintain and cost-ineffective. Bill likens their approach to the Heisman pose, “You’ve got to hold on to the ball and get into the end zone while making sure nothing touches you.” This means placing minimal infrastructure in the water and ensuring it can withstand the ocean's destructive forces. One of the most exciting aspects of Breakwave Energy's technology is its potential for scalability and versatility. Bill shared, "We have the ability to not only produce electricity but also to scale our technology to meet the needs of small villages or larger areas, and even to desalinate water directly using wave energy." Bill's innovative approach and commitment to rigorous testing before deployment highlight his dedication to creating a sustainable and effective solution for renewable energy. His team's ongoing collaboration with Cal State University San Marcos to test electrical components exemplifies their meticulous and thorough process. Content is a tool if you treat it like one. It can be great for gauging what your fans want, testing out new ideas, and see which songs are worth producing and releasing. It also can help you better learn what ways of promoting and creating through content. Every time you show up through content, you're both teaching your audience more of who you are and learning more about where you want things to continue to go. It's the easiest way to get your face out there and the most creative freedom you have when it comes to promotion. Yeah, it's frustrating sometimes and it can be time consuming to show up consistently. But a tool is still a tool, it's just up to you to use it.

One idea needs more than one execution. Content goes the same way. If you only try it out once, you're only giving your great idea one chance to succeed. And you're also leaving all your fate up to the algorithms to get it to the right people. So instead of trying it out once, find different ways to execute it. Every story can be told in a million different ways, so find a few styles you like and give those a shot. You give the idea more of an opportunity to succeed and also make creating content less dependent on new ideas and more dependent on different styles. It's about getting down to the heart of it and trying new things until you find something working. Just like you don't promote a song with one single piece of content, you shouldn't use an idea just once. Work smarter.

Co-host chemistry gets better with every episode. With interview-based shows? It resets to zero with every guest. Which leads to a big problem in B2B land: The content can be boring. 3 reasons WHY this happens: 1) It's VERY hard to create chemistry between a host and a guest, even with a pre-interview. 2) Hosts typically let their guests choose the topic based on the guest's expertise. But it's really hard to know if those topics are actually interesting to your audience. 3) It's too easy for the narrative of the show to be non-existent or at least disjointed because the guests dictate the content. The most common reaction I get: "But James, what about big guests?!" ✋🛑 Bigger guests are NOT the answer. Why? Big guests don’t actually share the episode. They don’t need to! They’re big names because they ALREADY have their content systems locked in — and those systems aren’t reliant on the episode they did with you. So if you’re relying on big guests for distribution…you’re gonna be in for a rude awakening. This is why I LOVE co-hosted commentary. When 2 (or more) co-hosts who have chemistry are commenting on timely or relevant stuff in your space that’s already popped off on Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, etc? You've just validated that your topic is interesting to your audience BEFORE you ever hit record. It allows for personality, chemistry, and a consistent narrative (the POVs of your co-hosts) that interview-based shows struggle to achieve. This is coming from someone who’s produced 350+ interview podcasts. That was our primary focus at Sweet Fish for over 9 years. Which is why marketing is so exciting.
