As TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) continue negotiations to agree on a compensation framework for music royalties on the platform, yesterday reports started to emerge that some tracks from non-UMG artists, such as Adele and Harry Styles, are being removed from TikTok if they are part of UMG's publishing catalogue. In the meantime, music companies and artists have started looking for alternatives to maintain vital connections with fans. Instagram Reels, with its estimated 1.8 billion monthly active users (0.3 billion more than TikTok) stands out as a competitive platform for engagement and revenue generation in the short-form video space. To see where opportunities lie for the use of music in Reels campaigns, our client round. has analysed over 30,000 Reels posts, as well as data from over 200 campaigns that the team executed in 2023. Here are some of the trends Round identified: • Old vs new: Catalogue releases made up over half of all trending tracks on Reels, presenting an opportunity for label marketing managers to create viral Reels campaigns driven by tracks that are widely known and loved by the public. • Most popular genres: Pop (36%) and dance (26%) are the dominant music genres trending on Reels. Instrumental and film soundtrack audios account for nearly half of trending audios. • Communities on Reels vs individuals on TikTok: There is a strong emphasis on community on Instagram, with 10x more music being shared on Reels than on TikTok’s 'For You' page. • Fan interaction thrives on Reels: Followers are 5x more likely to interact with content on Instagram than TikTok. The platform is more than just a stage for content consumption, with engaged audiences interacting and creating dedicated fandom communities driven by their passions. Have influencers ruined music festivals for Gen Zs? 🎧 ✨ Earlier this year when the headliners for Coachella were announced, the internet had some loud opposition towards certain artists and even the festival itself, saying that Coachella was a flop and overrun by creators instead of folks who actually enjoy the music. But, as the dates approached, more and more people grew excited about the lineup itself. There were still artists that just didn’t seem to fit the bill for the typical Coachella goer this year, but it wasn't a reflection of their talent or popularity, but rather that the particular audience that Coachella brings in might not overlap with the fans of some genres or singers. But everyone is entitled to their opinion, right? Even if it means they aren’t fans of every single artist playing at a music festival, that doesn’t necessarily translate into them not being there for the music or having a fun time. Coachella being overrun by influencers doesn’t mean that Gen Z's who attend Coachella aren't fully appreciating the true meaning of music and the festival. Gatekeeping these types of experiences has grown within the young festival-going community as more and more people want to experience them. More attention means more presence online and this can lead to an influx of influencers coming in and taking over. But Gen Z is fighting to keep the true purpose of these events alive, they want to experience the vibes and the music, and sing their hearts out to their favorite artists. So, have influencers ruined Coachella? To some, yes. But, it doesn't have to be that way. If younger audiences can push past their desire to gatekeep experiences and artists, then it won't matter what type of people are going to Coachella. Only the music will matter. #thoughtleadership #Coachella #music #genzmarketing #influencers #agency
