Wrote a short post on history repeating itself with the explosion of growth in Retail Media. With marketing dollars continuing to shift to performance focused spend, Retail Media sits at an intersection that promises tremendous growth whichever turn you take. Pent up demand for high ROI channels of marketing, privacy friendly advertising, and high ROI for all participating parties. Opportunities abound. And another takeaway - Amazon does it again by showing the world that not only can it redefine how humans shop and lead the world on cloud infrastructure - but it can rebuild a better version of the commercial lifeblood of the internet by inventing ads that work. Amazon continues to support Xmars' AI-powered advertising tech. I just got back from a 48 hour trip to NYC where Jun Yuan and I had the chance to spend time with Teresa Uthurralt and her incredible team including Jeffrey Cohen, Shekar Reddy and Lin (Susan) Zhai. The more our relationship with Amazon deepens, the clearer it is that Amazon and Xmars share the same vision for what the future of Amazon advertising looks like. AI is dramatically improving efficiency and incrementally while AMC is unlocking a whole new world of opportunity rooted in incredible data. It’s one thing for Xmars to be building toward this future. It’s another to have a massive global marketplace such as Amazon fully embrace that direction and support the mission. CAMPAIGN REPORTS: Ebiquity's latest research of COMvergence barometer reveals a 11% decline in media pitches in China in 2023 compared to the previous year. Ebiquity predicts a significant rebound in 2024, forecasting a 20% to 30% increase in media pitches compared to 2023. Publicis Media Group and Zenith Media emerged as the top winners, securing new business net values of RMB 2.2 billion and RMB 1.5 billion respectively. Omnicom Media Group's Hearts & Science followed closely, achieving a new business net value of RMB 1.3 billion. Carlsberg, Junlebao, and Jaguar Land Rover topped the list of the three largest pitch with agency changes, with values reaching RMB 700 million, RMB 600 million, and RMB 600 million respectively. These stats out of Hong Kong really illustrate why an omnichannel approach across the open internet is critical for brands who want to reach a premium audience. 16% of Hong Kong internet users are YouTube premium subscribers, compared to the global average of 12.7%. But this 16% of users represents a huge missed opportunity for advertisers. They’re 43% more likely to be interested in cars, 27% more likely to be interested in beauty and cosmetics products, 20% more likely to be interested in fashion, and 98% more likely to be an expectant or new parent. So how do advertisers reach this segment? The ratio of time consumers spend on the open internet compared to walled gardens is 59% to 41% in APAC. Shifting budget to open internet channels such as Connected TV, and using an omnichannel approach is the best way to start.
