"We'll call it AI and people will gladly pay $700 for it!" - Humane's founders, probably. The Humane AI Pin is a lesson in... well, it's a lesson in a *lot* of things. Forget about the fact that its charger could "pose a fire safety risk" because that's just the icing on the cake. But perhaps the most important lesson is that products and services need to deliver value. They need to solve a problem, make lives easier, be entertaining... *something*. This product is, despite some of the interesting engineering, worse than smartphones in just about every way possible. There's going to be a lot of worthless "AI" stuff over the next couple of years. But as you navigate the products and services that utilize AI (or consider building something yourself), ask yourself, "What problem is this solving?" or "How does this make life easier?" There is no clear categorisation of our roles, and even the naming differs between organisations, due to the novel nature of our profiles. As a result, I decided to turn this frustration into something potentially useful for our community of professionals. "What is product counsel?" 🤔 This is a question I get frequently from attorneys and non-attorney's alike. Product counsel acts as a forward-deployed lawyer amongst the product, design, and engineering teams; their job is to deeply understand the product goals and to surface legal considerations early on in a product's lifecycle. The concept of "product counsel" was first pioneered at Google, 20 years ago by Nicole Wong and Alexander Macgillivray with the following thesis: "how do we get legal involved at the beginning rather than the end of the product process?" One of the potential benefits of opening up competition for payments in both the Android and iOS ecosystems will be forced innovation on the incumbents. Google is already doing some great stuff with changes to the Play Store that allow for custom listings based on keywords (every app should use this) and some additional payment options. On the surface, paid events may seem like a simple feature, but they unlock immense opportunities for new member growth in communities 📈 One of the most exciting aspects of building new products is getting them into the hands of customers as fast as possible to start gathering feedback on what to build next. When we started developing paid events, our primary use case was to enable selling paid events to existing members. After rolling out early access, our communities flooded us with feedback, expressing their desire to use paid events for new member outreach. We spent a few weeks tweaking the flow, ultimately giving communities a new vector for member growth that was previously unavailable. Now, communities can use their events to give non-members a taste of the rich and vibrant community behind the paywall curtain. Once new members are in the door, communities can quickly upsell them into full memberships (it's super frictionless since you already have their information and they've begun to trust the community's brand). In just the last few weeks of early access, we've heard from several communities that they plan to consolidate to Circle's paid events from huge event management platforms 🤯. It brought back memories of cleaning out large content repositories. Here are some key takeaways: - Understand what content is useful and being used through data, empathy mapping, and stakeholder interviews. - Align content priorities with the mission of your customer (leadership and the GTM team you support). - Develop a plan to either resurrect or retire content. - Ensure that your changes bring value to your customer.
