Emotional Balance for Resilience in the Workplace or in Sports🌱 Emotional regulation is crucial for thriving in high-pressure environments. According to research, there are three core emotion systems that shape how we respond to stress: 1️⃣ Threat System: This system kicks in when we feel threatened, sparking fear and anger, and triggering the stress response. 2️⃣ Resource System: This system drives motivation, reward-seeking, and competition. It fuels enthusiasm but can also lead to burnout if over-activated. 3️⃣ Soothing System: Often overlooked, this system brings a sense of peace, calm, and connection. It’s crucial for generating resilience and maintaining well-being. Activating the soothing system releases endorphins that help us stay strong during difficult times. 🧘‍♀️ To build resilience, we need a balance between all three systems. The most difficult thing for athletes, especially during a training cycle, is to take the needed time off from training to heal when injured. I know this firsthand and have had several instances where I was sidelined from running injuries. It’s important to remember that taking some time off is not going to impact your training or fitness significantly. If you’re like me and have a hard time taking off, keep the following points in mind: 🤔🎯 Research suggests that a break from running of less than two weeks is unlikely to result in significant fitness loss. In fact, short breaks can sometimes be beneficial for recovery and preventing burnout. However, individual responses may vary based on factors like fitness level, duration of the break, and overall lifestyle. In addition, Your current fitness level can impact how much fitness you lose during a two-week break from running. Generally, individuals with higher fitness levels may experience a smaller decline in fitness compared to those with lower fitness levels. This is because they have a stronger aerobic base and muscle memory, which allows them to maintain their conditioning more effectively during the break. However, it’s essential to maintain some level of, such as cross-training or light exercise, to minimize any loss in fitness. I am in the midst of writing a long over due blog post (it won't be the next one to come out, but the one after). The idea of the blog post was to document all the major non-performance or non-physique related benefits of strength training (which is what people usually think about). The reason that it has taken so much longer than expected is that there are just SO MANY benefits to strength training! Without giving too many spoilers, basically all of the parts of your body that move benefits, blood markers improve, risk of injury decreases, quality of life increases. If there ever was a fountain of youth, picking up heavy things and putting them down again is it! I think so many people don’t get involved in strength training because either they see it as unnecessary or they just dont identify with it as if its just for the gym bros and athletes. This is ironic because it is everyday people who will see the most benefit from just adding even 1-2hrs of strength training a week!
