The City of Atlanta wants to break ground on another "rapid housing" development before the end of the month. This will be on city-owned property at the northwest corner of 17th Street and Northside Drive. The city plans to use modular units to provide 100 residences as part of a three-story structure. The city's Rapid Housing Initiative provides housing plus mental health (and other) services to people experiencing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/ehJSAAJ7

It seems like adding all those lanes to the I-75/85 Connector didn't help anything, and may have just induced more traffic. Maybe an investment in more transit, plus more compact growth (versus our intense sprawl) would have been better. Yes, it's a utopian, urbanist dream. But dreams are good; they can grow up to become visions and plans. Speaking of... Please join us for a @driftthemap this Sunday, December 8, 1 pm - 4 pm exploring Druid Hills' masterpiece of landscape architecture, Olmsted Linear Park! These six parks in a row, laid out like the jewels in a necklace, were designed in the 1890s by the legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York’s Central Park. We'll be joined by special guest Olmsted Linear Park Alliance executive director Sandra Kruger, along with a landscape architect and forest ecologist who will explain Olmsted's vision for an urban park and recount the fight to save this park from the Presidential Parkway and restore it after decades of neglect. Drift details: This three hour, 3.6 mile round trip walk will depart 1 p.m. December 8 from Deepdene Park, outside: 2189 N Ponce De Leon Ave (the east end of the park of North Ponce de Leon and Ponce de Leon Avenue) We will ramble through Deepdene, Dellwood, Shadyside, Oak Grove, Virgllee, and Springdale Parks, and back again. Participants may call an Uber/Lyft at the halfway point if desired. More information is at https://lnkd.in/gnCpfQj4 We hope you'll join us!

Sad news: Georgia Tech Professor Richard Dagenhart has passed away. One of the most influential urbanism teachers in the city, his impact on Atlanta across a generation of Georgia Tech graduates and Good Urbanism 101 participants is difficult to measure. He was a big influence on ThreadATL, and the urbanism discourse across the city would not be what it is today without his presence. He will be missed, but his influence will be felt. https://lnkd.in/eBTgNg6r

A new development in Virginia Highland offers 23 housing units for the chronically unsheltered, plus mental health services 🙌 People earning less than 30% AMI can use it. It's nice to see this near the Beltline & MARTA service, on walkable streets. The primary needs here are housing & health, but it's also a reminder: good urbanism should be accessible to all. https://lnkd.in/eGbDMUrn

Thanks to Mayor Dickens for speaking out against the proposal for a data center in Adair Park near the West End MARTA Station!! He emailed City Council members just prior to today's meeting. "NPU T, City Planning staff, and the Zoning Review Board all recommended denial of this zoning change. I stand alongside them and recommend that we continue to adhere to the limitations set forth in 24-O-1222 in the interest of promoting healthy, whole communities where all can thrive. I also welcome engagement on this issue that prioritizes early collaboration with our Department of Planning, Watershed Management, Office of Sustainability and Resilience and Office of Policy to develop a framework for how data centers fit into our comprehensive development planning, sustainable practices, climate goals/emissions goals while meeting community needs. However, I cannot and do not support this legislation and urge you to vote no."
