A new development in Virginia Highland offers 23 housing units for the chronically unsheltered, plus mental health services 🙌 People earning less than 30% AMI can use it. It's nice to see this near the Beltline & MARTA service, on walkable streets. The primary needs here are housing & health, but it's also a reminder: good urbanism should be accessible to all. https://lnkd.in/eGbDMUrn

🏡 Affordable, accessible housing is essential for a decent life, but many rural areas are falling short. For those with accessibility needs, a well-designed and accessible home is critical. After Gail’s amputation, without access to suitable housing, she had to crawl upstairs in her multi-story home, impacting her independence and mental health. After 3 years Carla and Gail were finally able to secure a house that suited their needs, thanks to Habinteg. This broken system needs urgent reform to ensure everyone has access to the homes that they need. https://lnkd.in/gaAZfENb

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs underscores the foundational importance of housing as a basic need. Addressing this need, Housing First offers immediate, permanent housing to individuals experiencing homelessness without preconditions, serving as a stable platform for addressing higher-level needs like trauma and mental health. Critics raise concerns about accountability in Housing First, particularly regarding substance use and mental health. However, evidence indicates that stable housing actually enhances accountability by creating a secure environment conducive to treatment and services promoting personal responsibility and self-sufficiency. To maximize impact, Housing First can be integrated with Healing Centered Engagement (HCE). This holistic approach focuses on safety, trust, and empowerment, creating a supportive environment for transformative change. The synergy between Housing First and HCE leads to sustainable positive outcomes, fostering a community where every individual can thrive. #HousingFirst #HealingCenteredEngagement #CommunitySupport #PositiveOutcomes

Link to article: https://lnkd.in/dmJgAeDF Against the background of relentless urban development we are currently witnessing in our country, particularly in the explosion of construction of apartment blocks with limited provision for social amenities and outdoor spaces, it is important to undertake an exploration of the implications of such crowding on people’s mental health. Crowded spaces have long been associated with negative effects on mental health. From crowded city streets to packed public transportation, the experience of being in close proximity to many others can be stressful and overwhelming. But perhaps nowhere is the impact of overcrowding more starkly illustrated than in the infamous “Mouse Utopia” experiments conducted by psychologist John B. Calhoun in the 1960s and 1970s. Calhoun’s experiments involved creating a controlled environment for mice, designed to be a paradise free from predators and resource scarcity. The initial results were promising: the mice flourished, reproducing rapidly and enjoying a life of relative ease. However, as the population grew, so too did the problems... #mentalhealthadvocate #MentalFitness #mentalwellness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthandhousing #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #mentalillness #mentalhealthsupport #urbandevelopment #urbandeveloper #urbandevelopers

This National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, explore the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and stories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples.
Today, on National Truth and Reconciliation Day, we honor the survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities across Canada. 🧡 This day is a reminder to acknowledge the painful legacy of colonization and to reflect on our role in creating a future built on understanding, healing, and respect. At Clearwater Integrated Health, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and commit to supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing for all. We are here to provide a safe, judgment-free space for those navigating the weight of trauma and the journey toward healing. Let us all take time today to listen, learn, and reflect on the truth, as we work together toward meaningful reconciliation. We encourage everyone to learn more about the history of residential schools and to support local Indigenous organizations. #EveryChildMatters #NationalTruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #IndigenousHealing #ClearwaterSupports #TruthAndReconciliation #MentalHealthMatters #JudgmentFreeZone #HealingTogether

Enjoyed this piece from Steve Moseley in Inside Housing. Great to hear about how London & Quadrant Housing Trust is amplifying resident voice and sharing stories of people living in social housing to challenge stereotypes, which has also been done so beautifully through Shelter's #MadeInSocialHousing campaign. It's fantastic to see more being done about addressing and challenging stigma, particularly as it is one area of the Social Housing Green Paper that wasn't fully addressed through the White Paper. Social housing providers need to continue to look at whether the way they interact with tenants, and the services they deliver, make stigma better or worse. This includes voids and lettings standards. In our recent research for Longleigh Foundation, we found that tenants feel stigma when they move into their new social home and it doesn't have carpets or other floor coverings. Government could do so much more here too, through a funded improvement in standards. Longleigh is now involved in A Voice for Tenants, which I am sure will have a great impact on tenant voice on national policy, and also, I hope, addressing stigma. https://lnkd.in/efwdUKKh
Why improving services must include tackling stigma

Does New Zealand's Health Service have a trouble with math? Here is a little odd example: The West Coast District of New Zealand has a static population of 33,000. Three hours travel Greymouth to Christchurch. A new mental health inpatient will be built there with seven beds at a cost of $27 million. The Central Otago Queenstown Lakes Districts have an expanding population of 80,000. Three hours travel to Invercargill or Dunedin. No inpatient mental health facility planned at all. Can somebody give me an explanation for this. Please comment. (disclaimers: 1: I don't much favour inpatient treatment anyway. 2: I can't do the math myself as to how this build which is essentially three houses glued together, can cost $4 million a bedroom)

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we reflect on our recent survey where we found 81% of Londoners say construction noise has harmed their mental health in the past year, with 11% reporting their mental health has been 'significantly affected'. As an urban impact agency, we support construction companies in managing their projects in the planning stage to keep noise to a minimum and reduce the impact on local communities. #Construction #NoisePollution
