The City of Atlanta wants to break ground on another "rapid housing" development before the end of the month. This will be on city-owned property at the northwest corner of 17th Street and Northside Drive. The city plans to use modular units to provide 100 residences as part of a three-story structure. The city's Rapid Housing Initiative provides housing plus mental health (and other) services to people experiencing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/ehJSAAJ7

This post is outside my normal, as it is focused on a local issue for me. I am passionate about improved urban planning as a powerful approach to addressing climate change, as well as other social issues (e.g., economic inequality, homelessness, mental health). This op-ed is primarily for those in the Seattle, WA area who are fighting for a better city. It summarizes well the challenge many cities in the USA are facing to address the legacy of exclusionary zoning and bad transportation and housing policy. #housingcrisis #housingaffordability #climateaction #climatechangesolutions https://lnkd.in/gHYAhmGX

Veteran Housing Corp agrees with Mike Mathias NCPS, CRS in many respects. What America needs to "kill two birds with one shot", or otherwise, solve the affordable housing crisis and problem of homelessness is not to make more affordable housing but to make housing more affordable. My only caveat is that no local, state, or federal government should provide any incentive or funding to any housing project unless the affordability period is permanent and in perpetuity! This October, we're diving deep into key housing terms that are essential for understanding our community. Here's what you need to know: 1. Housing Price Index (HPI): Tracks price changes in repeat sales or refinancing, allowing for reliable comparisons of single-family home prices across regions. 2. Housing Cost-Burdened: Households that spend 30% or more of their income on housing. 3. Affordability Gap: The difference between what individuals can afford to pay for housing and actual housing costs. 4. Eviction Filings: The legal process where a landlord delivers a "notice to vacate" and files to evict a tenant. 5. 4 Categories of Homelessness: - Unsheltered: People without nighttime residence living in places not meant for habitation. - Imminent Risk: Those at imminent risk of losing their home with no resources. - Unaccompanied Youth: Youth under 25 without stable housing. - Domestic Violence Survivors: Individuals fleeing domestic violence without residence or support. 6. Sheltered: Staying in shelters or temporary housing. 7. Affordable Housing: Housing that costs no more than 30% of a household's income. 8. Permanent Housing (Housing First Model): Prioritizing permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness as quickly as possible. Let's empower ourselves with this knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions this month! #UnderstandingHouston #Housing101 #OctoberLearning

How we talk about housing inequality and homelessness to our neighbors, strangers, friends and family has a role to play in shaping what's considered common sense, right and wrong. At the Housing Narrative Lab we work with leaders to strengthen media relations, messaging, and content creation and we emphasize how scale, consistency and relationships are vital to narrative change. Check out the blog post I wrote about how to use small-scale, 1-1 conversations to interrupt harmful narratives, bring people with you and build public will to solve homelessness and housing inequality. https://lnkd.in/e63Ty8BS

💡The outcomes of Boulder County's SAMHSA-funded Pathways to Housing Stability program, which OMNI has evaluated since 2019, are featured on KUNC radio!💡 The program supports adults experiencing chronic homelessness who also have behavioral health needs in finding and maintaining stable housing. Participants in the program reported: 1) significant decreases in homelessness/increases in owning or renting their own residence; 2) significant increases in quality of life and feelings of belonging, and 3) significant increases in feelings of having support in crisis and a community that is supportive of them in recovery. As evaluation partner, OMNI conducted a Program Implementation Study (which helped to identify and further inform effective program practices, areas of improvement, and opportunities for sustainability beyond the 5-year SAMHSA funding period), a Landlord Evaluation (themes surfaced were used to inform future strategies for enhancing relationships between clients who use housing choice vouchers and landlords in the Boulder County community), an Application Fees Evaluation, and a Case Management Standards Evaluation. 📥 Read the full Pathways to Housing Stability End of Grant Report here: https://lnkd.in/g65MMQkw. 📻 Listen to the KUNC segment, featuring Homeless Solutions for Boulder County Systems Manager Heidi Grove, here: https://lnkd.in/gi8JT3zP. #housingstability #evaluation #homelessness #community #publichealth

The U.S. housing crisis reveals a stark contradiction: 28 vacant homes exist for every person experiencing homelessness, with some cities like Detroit seeing as many as 116 homes per unhoused individual. Despite this, powerful organizations like the United States Association of Realtors spent over $30 million lobbying the government in 2023, raising the question: is this a failure of the market, regulation, or community values? The market’s inefficiency is evident, as homes sit vacant while homelessness rises, often driven by speculation and high costs. Regulations, shaped by lobbying, tend to favor property owners and investors, failing to address affordable housing adequately. Additionally, community resistance to affordable housing projects further exacerbates the problem. This landscape is ripe for tech disruption, yet without aligning regulation and societal values toward equitable housing solutions, even innovative approaches may fall short. The crisis calls for rethinking housing as a basic human right, not just a market commodity. #HousingCrisis #AffordableHousing #Homelessness #TechDisruption #RealEstateLobby #SocialJustice #CommunityValues #MarketFailure #HousingInequality #PolicyChange https://lnkd.in/eSgxhpgv
