Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far! Our plans for the fund will include additional #deployments in our partner's on-site grounds where we'll test our latest version of the artificial root filtration device. Furthermore, PolyGone's team plans to continuously partake in #communityengagement programs through collaboration and cooperation with the local vicinities most affected by #microplasticpollution in waterways. We're excited to show everyone our plans and projects for the future!

An interdisciplinary green tech company designing the first portable and affordable microplastic removal device
About us
Problem Every year approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our waterways, 80% of which gets transported via polluted rivers. Riverbourne debris consists of large and small plastic fragments. Smaller plastic fragments below 5 mm in diameter are called microplastics. They are rapidly becoming a global concern as they can easily be ingested by aquatic wildlife and humans, introducing potentially hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals into their diets or disrupting natural bodily functions. Additionally, due to their size, they are incredibly difficult to sequester from aquatic systems without significantly disrupting the ecosystem. With microplastic concentrations in rivers and drinking water on the rise, there is a critical need for new infrastructure to remove these harmful contaminants from our waterways. Solution: Our team has developed the world's first affordable, portable, and environmentally friendly microplastic sequestration device, the Plastic Hunter. The Plastic Hunter is a modular water treatment wetland pad that utilizes organic and artificial root networks as biofilters to passively entrap microplastics and is designed to work in rivers. Plant root fibers exude a gelatinous film that easily entraps and absorbs small river sediments like microplastics. Through the creation of dense networks of underwater plant roots, we aim to use our device to passively entrap microplastic sediments without disrupting the aquatic ecosystem.

Last month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its "National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution" report, which outlines its approach to mitigating the threat of plastic pollution to the environment and human health. The report includes a key focus on improving microplastic capture and removal technologies for wastewater, stormwater, and surface waters. The EPA's effective strategies include funding research, development, demonstration, deployment, and maintenance of existing technologies that capture and remove microplastics from water bodies. In addition, it calls for providing technical assistance to incorporate removal measures into local and state management plans. PolyGone is committed to developing innovative microplastic removal technology and strongly supports the measures the EPA is taking to address microplastic pollution.
