Last month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its "National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution" report, which outlines its approach to mitigating the threat of plastic pollution to the environment and human health. The report includes a key focus on improving microplastic capture and removal technologies for wastewater, stormwater, and surface waters. The EPA's effective strategies include funding research, development, demonstration, deployment, and maintenance of existing technologies that capture and remove microplastics from water bodies. In addition, it calls for providing technical assistance to incorporate removal measures into local and state management plans. PolyGone is committed to developing innovative microplastic removal technology and strongly supports the measures the EPA is taking to address microplastic pollution. $1.25M available for plastic pollution solutions. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is calling on industry innovators to help fight plastic pollution by developing bold and creative solutions to tackle the issue. Universities and government research institutions across the state are invited to apply for $1.25 million in grants under the Plastics Research Program (PRP), aimed at driving scientific studies and filling knowledge gaps. This new initiative seeks to bolster the EPA’s ability to protect the environment and people’s health from the impacts of problematic and unnecessary plastics. It also broadly strives to make NSW a leader in finding effective ways to manage plastic waste. International experts issue renewed call for Global Plastics Treaty to be grounded in robust science. With the scale of global plastic pollution “hindering the human right to a clean and safe environment”, and production still increasing rapidly, scientists say the treaty should address the human and environmental health impacts of plastics. Richard Thompson OBE FRS said: “Progress towards safe, sustainable and equitable decision-making urgently requires a clear mandate for a science-policy interface as a subsidiary body to the future treaty.” Read the full story here https://lnkd.in/e3hGY_U7 #plasticpollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #plastics #environment #pollution #PlymUni #uniplym #UniversityofPlymouth #plymouth #Devon #SouthWest

The Australian Government is a member of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, which is currently negotiating this treaty. The HAC's latest joint statement for INC-4 highlights the importance of producer responsibility across the lifecycle including the need to improve product design: " Emphasise the principle that polluters must be held responsible for their activities and products, recognizing that extended producer responsibility schemes, fit to national circumstances, are part of the solution, and further emphasise the significant potential for improving product design and environmentally sound waste management. "In March 2022, at the resumed fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), a historic resolution was adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment." 2024 would be crucial for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop this instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. for those who are interested theres a good amount of reading material here: https://lnkd.in/g52UZYrc #INC5.

#Microplastics are pieces of plastic usually smaller than 5 mm, which are hard to dispose of or recycle. In the EU alone, around 145,000 tonnes of microplastics are estimated to be used, with an estimated 42,000 tonnes ending up in the environment. In 2023, a new REACH restriction was introduced to address intentionally added microplastics. Wondering what damage is caused by microplastics and which products will be affected by the restrictions? Caspar ter Horst, the Managing Director of ProductIP B.V., has shared his insights in the article.
