Operations-wise, what are our experts keeping an eye on across different modes of transport? “We’re still seeing 18 days of [rail] dwell into the West Coast,” said Nathan Strang, Flexport’s Director of Ocean Freight, during yesterday’s FMU Live webinar. “We’re also seeing [transshipment] delays going through the Panama Canal.” 👇 Other focus areas include ports in Montreal and Vancouver, where some operations have already resumed post-lockout, as well as the recent breakdown in talks between the ILA and USMX this week. The two sides had aimed to reach an agreement on a new six-year master contract. Read our live blog here: flx.to/rgt We’ve also been closely monitoring the labor disputes in Canada. Ports in Montreal and Vancouver are set to reopen after Canadian Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon moved to end lockouts on November 12. Read our blog here: flx.to/v9r Now, moving on to our trade lane updates: 🚢Trans-Pacific Eastbound trade lane: Rates continue to vary across routes between China and Southeast Asia, though we’re seeing increased pressure on routes to the U.S. West Coast. 🚢Far East Westbound trade lane: Space will remain tight in the second half of November due to ongoing blank sailings and a continuously growing roll pool. 🚢Trans-Atlantic Westbound trade lane: In Northern Europe, demand remains stable and strong. Most services to New York are fully booked, while there is more available capacity in the main Southeast ports. ✈️Global air freight update: In week 44 (28 Oct - 3 Nov), worldwide air cargo rates increased by +2% WoW to $2.71 per kilo, up +12% YoY. #supplychain #logistics #freightmarket #freightindustry #oceanfreight #oceancargo #oceanshipping #airfreight #aircargo #airshipping #trucking #intermodal #railfreight

This morning, the ILA announced that they broke off talks with USMX after the employer group proposed semi-automation at ports. “The ILA recognized this as a renewed attempt by USMX to eliminate ILA jobs with automation,” the union’s statement read. “The three-day strike in early October should serve as proof of how much [the ILA] will sacrifice to fight for a fair and decent contract.” With a January 15th contract deadline on the horizon, another potential port strike looms large. Today (November 12), Canadian Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon moved to end the lockouts in Montreal and Vancouver, directing the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order that operations resume at the country’s two biggest ports. MacKinnon’s intervention followed a breakdown in talks between the ILWU Local 514 and the B.C. Maritime Employers Association over the weekend, along with a lockout at the Port of Montreal that began Sunday night. According to MacKinnon, the lockouts affected $1.3 billion CAD (or $930 million USD) in goods each day.
