As product leaders, we're often told that our primary role is to ensure our scarce resources are working on the right things to provide client value. While that's true, I believe our role as Product Managers (PMs) is to unlock the full potential of our teams, converting their potential energy into kinetic energy that drives meaningful impact and results. The laws of physics dictate that energy is conserved, but as product leaders, we can bring additional forces to the table to amplify our team's output. Amplifying Kinetic Energy: Some Suggested Ways to Get Started To unlock the full potential of our teams, we need to create an environment that accelerates their kinetic energy. Here are a few strategies that can help: Talent Acceleration: As PMs, we play a critical role in recruiting, developing, and nurturing the right talent. By bringing in and cultivating individuals with diverse skill sets, experiences, and perspectives, we can create a team that's greater than the sum of its parts. Constraint-Driven Innovation: By defining clear constraints, we empower our teams to focus on the most important problems to solve. Our goal is to identify what not to work on, as much as what to work on, and remove unnecessary distractions. This clarity allows creativity and thoughtful solutions to thrive. For example, when designing a new mobile app feature, we might impose a constraint like: "The solution must be usable by a customer in 30 seconds or less, with one hand, while waiting in line." This constraint gives our team a clear direction, allowing them to design an intuitive, streamlined experience for our target persona - a busy, tech-savvy mom. User-Centric Research: As PMs, we need to stay disciplined in user market research, ensuring that our teams have a deep and up-to-date understanding of our customers' evolving needs. Relying on outdated knowledge from 12 months ago can lead to missed opportunities and misaligned products. Continuous research fuels our team's kinetic energy by ensuring we're solving real, current problems and creating value that resonates with our users. For those who think it's hard to set up user research... Automate it. Leverage your email platform or product analytics tool to set up triggered research invites. Imagine this: a few days after a user signs up or interacts with a key feature, a personalized email invites them to schedule a quick chat. It's like magic—user research calls appear on your calendar automatically, keeping your finger on the pulse of your users' experiences. A high-performing team is your ultimate competitive advantage in a fast-changing world. By empowering your team with the right strategies, you create a multiplier effect that drives innovation, growth, and lasting success.

Hey LinkedIn Team & LinkedIn PMs fam! Hope you're all doing well as H2'24 kicks off, bringing in the season of festivity and higher revenue. 🎉 As a Product Leader, I love exploring premiumness or loyalty driving products myself to refine my Product thinking nuggets for user retention. In that context, I had subscribed to LinkedIn Business Premium couple of years back, which renews every year. I have been and am still a LinkedIn Premium Subscriber (as I write this). Interestingly, despite being a Premium member, I continue to receive a barrage of ads and messages prompting me to upgrade... to Premium. 🤔 It makes me wonder if there's a disconnect somewhere within the system - perhaps a hiccup in the CDP or Sales pipelines not syncing with the CRM or DMP? I'm curious to learn from fellow LinkedIn PMs about the best practices they follow to ensure real-time data consistency across different platforms. Specifically for ads or growth campaigns! Additionally, I wonder if there's a possibility, dear LinkedIn PMs fam, to introduce a "Don't show me ads" toggle for dedicated Premium customers? 🤔 This is not a rant, just a request :) Edge cases exist, and I understand your roadmap might be full! In my experience of interviewing and working with many product leaders, a common trait among the great ones is treating their craft more as a science than an art. Delighting users, creating magical experiences, and ultimately developing software that users love to use is a science. An immediate red flag during interviews is when product leaders can't express details beyond "talking to customers" on how they build lovable products. While talking to customers is paramount, I listen for the structure and tools they use to become customer-centric and experts in the users they serve. Here’s what I look for: Methods to Listen For When Evaluating How Product Leaders Create Lovable Products: 🗺️ Journey Mapping: Understand what users do before and after they interact with your product or attempt to accomplish their job. 🔑 Key Moments Identification: Reveal the key moments that matter in the user journey. 😌 Emotional State Awareness: Understand the emotional states of users and how they change as they progress through the journey. 📊 Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze data to understand funnels, drop-off rates, attrition, etc. I’m also on the lookout for specific techniques on how the product leader builds high-performing product teams. Here are some of the practices to listen for: 🏆 Recognition and Rewards: Establish clear KPIs that define success, create accountability, and drive alignment. Implement a system for recognizing and rewarding team achievements and individual contributions. 🤝 Consistent 1-on-1s: Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to mentor and guide the career and development of the product management team. 👥 Team Collaboration: Allow teams to craft their process and evolve it over time. My favorite team performance ceremony is the retrospective, where the team can gather in a safe place and collectively define how they will improve. 🔄 Cross-Functional Alignment: Create alignment between product, engineering, sales, marketing, and leadership. This involves regular cross-functional meetings, transparent communication of goals and progress, and a unified vision that ties the efforts of all departments together. Ensuring that all teams are moving in the same direction is crucial for driving consistent and sustainable growth. Overall, there are many important items across both themes that define effective product leadership. By listening for a product leader who employs these structured methods, companies can make a better hire to turn insights into actionable strategies, ensuring that the user experience is not left to chance but meticulously crafted and continuously improved, while building and managing high-performing teams that drive success.

Alright #deliverability nerds and #emailgeeks, what are terms you hear spoken and discussed that are clearly misunderstood? I often get questions about deliverabilty when delivery is the intention...so I wrote an article about it because there is a lot of documentation out there, but it's not all accurate. Three weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the Product Leadership Program, which left me eager to return to work and apply what I learned. Here's a summary of the key takeaways: 1. Presence in Leadership: When leading others and yourself, presence is crucial. Be fully present and offer your presence to others. Actively listen and be genuinely curious about the beliefs driving behavior, both your own and others'. Changing perspectives is essential for development, and having a trusted group of advisors, like a personal board of directors, can greatly aid this process. 2. Machine Learning and Data Quality: Machine learning, including generative AI, has many limitations but can be highly beneficial in various business cases if the data quality is high. Therefore, prioritize improving data quality. 3. Responsibilities of a Product Leader: As a product leader, your responsibilities include creating a coherent product strategy, determining where to play and how to win. Ask yourself if you have a clear product strategy. Additionally, focus on hiring and firing based on mindset—prefer those who proactively figure out what to do over those who wait for instructions. Finally, drive value creation by removing unnecessary features and simplifying processes, encouraging your team to do the same. I want to hear a product story you're passionate about. (Edit for the Monday morning crew: the reaction to this post has been incredible. If you have PMs in your network who have amazing stories, I would appreciate a repost to reach them!) As a product manager, I know it can be hard to describe what we do to those around us. Our work often involves mountains of coded language, company and industry vernacular, and a variety of tasks and processes that can make it hard to describe. Yet, I love telling stories about products I've worked on. I can't be the only one, so I want to create a space for others to tell their stories in their own words. Let me be your audience. Any aspect of PMing is welcome. Your story could be prepared and practiced, or it could be the first time you've spoken it out loud. It could be about how you broke into product after years of trying, or accidentally stumbled your way in. Tell me about the thing you worked really hard on and you're proud to have launched. Give me way too much detail about how your users surprised you once your work was out in the world. I will listen to you vent about the nightmare stakeholder who almost torpedoed the entire thing, or lament the feature you've always wanted to launch, but have never successfully made the case for. I want to be clear: I'm doing this for fun. This is not an interview. I'm not going to come in with a set of prepared questions. Once you get going, I won't interrupt you. This is 30 free minutes to tell your story to someone who understands. And since it's just me on the receiving end, it's more talking to a friend than public speaking. I'm planning to record the audio of these sessions, but feel free to ask me not to. I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet, but I promise I won't start a podcast.
