We’re making history! The ELO₂ Consortium—co-led by EPE Oceania and Lunar Outpost Oceania—has just been selected by the Australian Space Agency to build Australia’s first lunar rover, nicknamed "Roo-ver." This $42 million national project will harness the innovation and expertise of universities, SMEs, and industry partners from every corner of Australia to design, manufacture, and operate the rover right here at home. This milestone showcases Australian ingenuity on the global stage, sparks new jobs and research opportunities in the growing space industry, and strengthens our contribution to NASA’s Artemis Program, with “Roo-ver” set to be remotely operated on the Moon from Australia. Did you know? The Moon is exposed to high levels of radiation due to its lack of a protective atmosphere and magnetic field. ELO₂ has performed extensive analysis to understand the effects of radiation on the rover through all phases of the mission. Curious about what a day in the life of one of our engineers might look like?   On any given day, they might start with a team planning meeting, setting the stage for the day’s work. Then, it’s into 3D modelling, refining designs, and communicating across disciplines and sub-systems to ensure our lunar rover’s success. Collaboration is key, so our engineers consult with colleagues throughout the day about important aspects of design, such as flight qualification, machine vision and software requirements, making sure every component is appropriately de-risked for the mission.   But it’s not all about the technical side. Who knows better than kangaroos about traversing dusty terrain in distant locations? ELO₂ visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to introduce Pluto the Kangaroo to one of our prototypes for the Australian Space Agency's Trailblazer mission. Our Australian Made rover also drew the attention of a curious Emu. The skills, knowledge, and innovative spirit that Australia brings to the table will be represented in space through the Trailblazer initiative. By building 4 prototypes early in the project, each testing different aspects of the ELO₂ Consortium's lunar rover design, we've gained invaluable insights along the way and developed robust systems. These prototypes are not only advancing our mission but also serving as educational tools to inspire and involve students across Australia. ELO₂'s rover prototypes explore critical design features, including autonomous systems for semi-autonomous and remote lunar operations, chassis and suspension for effective traversal and regolith collection on uneven terrain, and the impact of the Moon's 1/6th gravity.
