Big news in the egg industry: We’re seeing positive signs that the industry is moving away from the practice of male chick culling, as two companies have recently announced their intention to adopt in-ovo sexing technology: Egg Innovations and Kipster. Market research by the think tank Innovate Animal Ag shows that while only about one in ten Americans are aware that male chicks are a discarded byproduct of the U.S. egg industry, once they learn about this, 73% report wanting to find an alternative. In-ovo sexing, currently used in Europe, could revolutionize one of the main welfare issues in the U.S. egg industry, and contribute to ending the practice of male chick culling altogether.
