Spring is the time of eggs hatching and chicks that need constant feeding! Parent bird species including Psittacines (hook-billed birds such as parrots, cockatiels, and parakeets) and Passerines (such as canaries, finches), regurgitate their food from their crop to feed their chicks. 96% of terrestrial birds feed their nestlings insects, not berries or seeds. Even birds as small as chickadees require thousands of caterpillars to successfully raise a healthy clutch of chicks. Why caterpillars? They are squishy, easy to digest and packed with protein. Those baby birds need a lot of protein to grow; songbirds often feed their babies as often as 4-12 times an hour! The best way to ensure plenty of chick food is to grow native plants (the best host plants for those protein caterpillar snacks). We can learn many lessons from nature. There would always be flocks of birds following the massive herds of bison that used to roam North America. On our farm we have turkeys following our grass fed beef. They compliment each other very well. Turkeys need the shorter grass that’s left behind by the cows. They also eat the bugs that are attracted to their manure. In turn, the turkeys boost the growth of the pasture as their manure is very high in nitrogen. What, Friday again already?! You know what they say, time flies when you're having fun! Hasn't it been a glorious week? Some real autumn sunshine, although a bit of a chill in the air. Makes you want to get outside to make the most of it, doesn't it! Sadly, it looks like this weekend won't be quite as sunny; there is the chance of a shower forecast on Saturday and Sunday looks quite wet... However, if you do get the chance to get out into your garden, here are our 'quick win' jobs for this weekend: - Collect seeds from biennials (like foxgloves) and sow immediately - Sow hardy annual or spring bedding seeds for flowering early next year; protect from harsh weather - Plant a grass; Stipas, Deschampsia and Festuca do well planted in September - Trim conifer hedges to neaten them up (before wildlife settles in) - Rake any thatch from your lawn, aerate compacted spots and seed any patches - Plant onion and shallot sets in a sunny spot for earlier harvesting next summer #LoveGardening #PlantAdvice #ExpertsInYourGarden

Seeds of the Black Bean (Castanospermum australe) in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. The unprocessed seeds are poisonous and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but they become edible when carefully prepared by roasting, cutting up into small pieces, leaching with running water for several days, and pounding into flour and roasting it as a damper. Due to its importance as a food, the blackbean tree was a seasonal gathering point for Aboriginal peoples, and this acted as a catalyst for ceremonies. Songlines featuring the Black Bean seeds have been collected. The bark fibre has been used for fish and animal traps, nets, and baskets, and the empty seedpods have been used as toy boats. This species is a member of the Fabaceae family which includes peas, beans etc. The tree can reach a height of 40m. The flowers are large, orange and red, pea-flower shaped, clustered on older branches. The seeds can be propagated in the nursery or pushed directly into the ground where we want them to grow.
