Providing age-appropriate online experiences is a key component of digital #trustandsafety. But each service’s uses differ, as do the expectations of its users, accordingly approaches to age assurance vary across services. A new DTSP report advances understanding of technical approaches to #ageassurance. It describes a range of best practices – specifically, five guiding principles for age assurance and three dozen examples of best practices in line with those principles. As speech becomes increasingly integrated with technology, questions arise about the FCC's role in regulating online speech. Last week, David Sullivan co-hosted the Ctrl-Alt-Speech podcast with Mike Masnick, discussing the agency's role in regulating online speech and providing insights on Meta’s Oversight Board's recent decision on terrorist attack videos. Last week in London provided an invigorating global perspective on #trustandsafety. Returning to the Marketplace Risk Global Summit (#MRGS24), I was pleased to present during two sessions and learn from many others! "#SafetybyDesign for Online Communities" - a topic Sasha Mathew and I have been discussing for years! We shared the Digital Trust and Safety Partnership Best Practices and the Trust & Safety Professional Association Safety by Design curriculum chapter with an expert audience of practitioners, putting concepts like risk assessments and maturity models into context. "Identifying Best Practices for AI and Automation in Trust and Safety" - huge thanks to Miriam Estrin from Google and Síne Creamer from Bumble for bringing DTSP's recent report on the use of AI for trust and safety to life, with practical examples of how companies are making progress applying AI to T&S challenges, and how industry-wide collaboration helps them do so! Elsewhere at the conference, it was a pleasure catching up with--and learning from--so many folks. Great connecting with James Smith, Arnika Singh, Ailís Daly, Dasha Rosenberg 🇮🇱, Aurelija Plėtienė, Pearlé Nwaezeigwe, Vincent Courson, Avi Jager, PhD, Fernanda Castillo, Chris Downie, Zhen Xiong Lim, and many others! Thanks Jeremy H. Gottschalk, Max Pinnau, and team for a great event!

“The clear and present safety risks from generative AI are widely discussed. Deepfake images, now trivially easy to produce, are used to scam, deceive, and harass. But AI does not just enable bad actors; it’s also a critical tool for trust and safety teams as they fight harassment, scams, and other forms of abuse.” Read David Sullivan and Farzaneh Badiei, PhD’s latest op-ed in Tech Policy Press on DTSP’s latest report promoting best practices for incorporating AI and automation into trust and safety. https://lnkd.in/eSbE6SjE

What an pleasure to moderate a pair of panels under "The Challenges of Free Speech and Technology" theme at the inaugural Global Free Speech Summit! For a global conversation about platform regulation, there's no trio better equipped than Mishi Choudhary, Esq., Jeff Kosseff, and Joan Barata to talk about the nuances of SCOTUS decisions in the United States, regulations like the Digital Services Act in Europe, and the complex relationship between governments and technology companies in countries such as India. And for the opportunities and risks for free expression with regard to AI, it was a pleasure learning from Neil Chilson, Sarah Shirazyan, and Anupam Chander. We examined the impact of AI on elections (limited so far), potential ways to advance free expression with generative AI, and the pros and cons of open versus closed approaches to LLMs from a free speech perspective. Thanks Jacob Mchangama, Jordi Calvet-Bademunt, and Wendy Holcomb Burch for bringing together such an inspiring event. Looking forward to next year! As the worlds of speech and technology become increasingly merged, questions arise about the future impacts on free expression. On October 18th, DTSP’s David Sullivan will moderate two panels at the Global Free Speech Summit. The first panel explores the impact and future of private online regulation of speech while the second panel examines how generative AI will impact the future of free speech and access to information. As required by European Union’s Digital Services Act, mandatory risk assessments are being conducted with questions arising about how to identify systemic risks. DTSP’s David Sullivan, GNI’s Jason Pielemeier and ARTICLE 19's Chantal Joris joined Tech Policy Press’ podcast for an insightful conversation on risk assessments and the “European Rights & Risk: Stakeholder Engagement Forum” held back in June. https://lnkd.in/eqf55J99
