We planned on making an announcement next month ahead of New York Climate Week, but it appears the cat is out of the bag! The Aether Diamonds brand has been acquired by Grown Brilliance. Moving forward, the team formerly known as Aether will be continuing our work in the world of synthetic carbon products under the Loa Carbon banner. Same company. Same tech. Shiny new name. Our business has always been transforming renewable energy and captured CO2 into synthetic carbon products. We had an opportunity to showcase our hydrocarbon synthesis technology in a truly beautiful way and couldn't be more proud of what our team has accomplished. We made something that inspired people and, in the process, had a chance to play an infinitesimally small role in the love stories of countless happy customers. Now, we get to see our technology scale in a way that can bring lasting impact to one of the world's most interesting industries. For those not in the know, there have been some big shake-ups and considerable consolidation in the lab-grown diamond sector as of late. The work that Grown Brilliance is doing in retail innovation and strategic vertical integration positions them well to dominate this high-growth market. We look forward to collaborating with their team and supplying them with our carbon-capture synthetic methane for many years to come! What's next for Loa Carbon? Commercial-scale conversion of renewable energy and captured CO2 into e-fuels and solid carbon materials. We're starting with synthetic natural gas, high-purity methane gas products, and high-quality graphene nanoplatelets. For us, carbon capture & utilization and the energy transition are two sides of the same coin. We aim to serve as a bridge between today’s largest renewable energy sources and the mature hydrocarbon infrastructure that spans the globe. What’s next for Mast? Kylie Mohr summarizes it well in this article for Grist: “Then there’s Mast Reforestation, a company that seeks to replant forests after they burn for carbon credits. CEO Grant Canary said he’s especially interested in burying the already-burned trees that create a hazard for workers and the tiny saplings they plant. The company plans to store between 5,000 and 20,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent that come from trees on hundreds of acres of recently burned private land in central Montana. Mast Reforestation is partnering with Zeng’s Carbon Lockdown Project on the site, and Canary said construction may be underway as soon as the end of 2024 or early 2025. As a winner of the Department of Energy’s prize, the project promises over 17,000 carbon dioxide removal credits to the federal government by the end of 2028.” We’re excited to partner with Carbon Lockdown on this innovative method of carbon removal. Over the last year, we have deployed 8 low-friction, synthetic development loans, the “Development SAFE,” to projects with significant climate and community impact. It’s like a reverse convertible note: an equity instrument that converts to debt at the CEO’s option once the project is fully funded and underway. Today ImpactAlpha is out with a story shining a light on this new tool, which we developed with Robert O'Connor of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Amy Cortese dug in with Avra van der Zee to understand the backstory and why we created the D-SAFE. I like this part— “‘That’s the capital that’s very high risk, but very catalytic, because without it, projects don’t happen,’ Jason Salfi of Dimensional Energy, a New York-based startup that upcycles captured carbon into chemicals and aviation fuel, told ImpactAlpha. Dimensional is among the first climate tech startups to use a new development-specific instrument to scale the gap and get commercial plants off the ground. The Development-SAFE, a twist on the “simple agreement for equity” widely used in Silicon Valley, was created by Elemental Excelerator and law firm Wilson Sonsini to address the specific needs of startups developing their first pilot plants or commercial facilities.” Dimensional used the D-SAFE to unlock 20x more project funding from Seneca Holdings and others to finance its sustainable aviation fuel plant in upstate NY. And we’ve deployed D-SAFEs to accelerate FOAKs and project development for Fervo Energy with Tim Latimer, Forum Mobility with Matt LeDucq, Capture6 with Ethan Cohen-Cole, and more Elemental portfolio companies. Our goal is to have the dollars recycle back to us as soon as the projects get larger financing so that we can re-deploy capital for impact.
