As we enter a year where we can expect heightened attacks on disabled communities and the #DisabilityJustice principles that advance justice for all—our movements must be fortified and protected with urgency. The Disability Inclusion Fund is proud to resource a network of organizations addressing critical issues nationwide, including #AffordableHousing and #VotingRights, equitable access to assistive technologies, reentry support for formerly incarcerated Deaf and/or disabled folks, holistic health and #MentalWellness, and emergency disaster preparedness and response. As we continue to witness the dissolution of our fundamental freedoms—from attacks on #BodilySovereignty to the uptick of #MassSurveillance—and heightened criminalization of marginalized communities and protestors of injustice, we are proud to resource a network of grantee partners that are organizing against the forces that bolster that injustice. Media misrepresentation and erasure have contributed to a legacy of oppression and harm against BIPOC communities. The REJ Fund's grantee partners are ensuring that Black, Indigenous, Latine, and SWANA people have the news and information they need to navigate today’s geographies and social systems, while also ensuring that everyone outside those communities is accurately informed. Nikki Brown Booker, DIF Program Director, and Yolanda Vargas, a #DisabilityJustice advocate and valued member of our DIF Participatory Grantmaking Committee, joined Justice Shorter for a much needed conversation on the realities of working while disabled in 2024. Together, they shed light on the importance of recognizing disabled people as both care recipients and employers, the need for collective bargaining and solidarity between disability and worker rights movements, and meaningful ways to create workplaces that truly welcome and support disabled employees. We’ve come to the season one finale of Infinite Patterns!🎙️ Thank you for joining us on this exploration of how the media shapes our perceptions of the world and how our grantee partners are working to re-shape the narrative. But don’t worry, this isn’t goodbye! We’ve got a ton of exciting content in the works for season two, so stay tuned for more updates on what’s to come. In episode 6, we’re diving into an area that is both incredibly timely and critically important: the evolving landscape of journalism and its role in representing the diverse voices that make up the fabric of our society. We spoke to Damaso Reyes of New York Amsterdam News, Crystal Good of Black By God THE WEST VIRGINIAN, and Luella Brien of Four Points Press—three publishers dedicated to disrupting the flat and authoritative (re: loud and wrong) voice of mainstream media. In celebration of #TransAwarenessWeek, we're uplifting our grantee partner, the Marsha P. Johnson Institute's virtual art gallery, created to memorialize the work of artists who participated in their Starship Artist Fellowship. Awareness can be dangerous if not accompanied by real support for trans leaders and organizers. So, programs like the Starship Artist Fellowship, which empowers Black trans creatives with the resources to navigate often transphobic art spaces, are incredibly important. 🎨 https://lnkd.in/gTSWUQxX
