The "NWT: Our Land for the Future" initiative reinforces the transformative impact of Indigenous leadership and their critical role as guardians of nature. The Bezos Earth Fund is proud to support Enduring Earth and its partners, helping Canada toward its 30x30 goal and helping protect critical ecosystems and cultural heritage. The PFP model started in Canada and these PFPs are helping secure lasting resources that benefit communities, nature, and our shared climate.

Exciting news! A historic agreement has been reached in the Northwest Territories, marking an unprecedented scale of collaboration. ‘Our Land for the Future’ brings together 22 Indigenous Governments, the Government of Canada, the Government of the Northwest Territories, and private donors, and will lead to a $375 million investment in Indigenous-led conservation in the NWT. The initiative is a new model for the world – one that will not only support Indigenous stewardship but also build a strong sustainable economy for the North.  Congratulations to everyone involved in the project!

🌿 Yesterday at the Advancing Forest Tenure Rights event, Indigenous leaders, the UK government, and major philanthropies united to strengthen support for forest tenure rights and direct financing to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs)! GATC speaker Buba Balkisou joined UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to raise ambitions for advancing direct funding to IP&LCs as we move towards 2030, with discussions on a second phase of the Forest Tenure Pledge in the lead-up to COP30. The UK government announced that £3 billion of its recent £11.6 billion climate finance pledge will go toward nature, with £1.5 billion explicitly earmarked for forest conservation. Minister Sonia Guajajara (Brazil’s Ministry of Indigenous Peoples), Andrew Steer (President and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund), and Hans Brattskar (Norway's Special Envoy for Climate and Forests) emphasized the importance of aligning more funding with territorial realities and increasing land titling for IP&LCs. The Forest Tenure Funders Group also launched its new report, highlighting that $1.34 billion—79% of the $1.7 billion pledged in 2021—has been disbursed, with 10.6% reaching Indigenous-led initiatives directly. While progress is substantial, more efforts are essential to ensure the majority of funds reach Indigenous-led financing mechanisms. Since the Pledge’s launch, the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, through the Shandia Platform, has championed reshaping financial systems to benefit our communities. Today, we reaffirmed our commitment to work with governments and philanthropies to direct more funds into the hands of the world's true guardians. With these resources, we- IP&LCs- will continue our ancestral role in defending ecosystems against growing threats. Today at #COP29 in Baku we discussed the future of Bretton Woods Institutions and their role in tackling climate change. Mark Malloch-Brown (Former Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations) stressed the need to balance between climate action and development goals. Andrew Steer (President and CEO, Bezos Earth Fund) called for a shift to a system-wide strategy for change. Helen M. (President & CEO, ClimateWorks Foundation) argued for updating economic models to incorporate the expansion of an economy and its resilience from climate investments. And Amal-Lee Amin (Managing Director and Head of Climate, Diversity and Advisory, British International Investment) challenged the IMF, the World Bank and others to think more deeply about what resilience really means over the next century, and how we should rethink the roles of the public and private sectors. I recently had the pleasure of visiting BluLever Education in South Africa, together with the team from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), where I met an inspiring group of apprentices who are thriving in a supportive and forward-thinking learning environment. Through Blulever’s leadership program, these apprentices are not only building critical skills but also cultivating the confidence to discuss and drive change on essential issues, including the role of women in the workforce and shaping the future of work itself. The ambition of Blulever’s founders to grow their impact is inspiring as well- they envision scaling this program beyond South Africa to other parts of the continent, bringing new opportunities and transformative learning to many more young people. Another powerful aspect of Blulever’s model is its unique approach to apprenticeships. Every student in the program has been placed in an apprenticeship, with the first cohort graduating this year. What stands out is Blulever’s ability to have businesses fund these apprenticeships by covering stipends- an approach that works because companies see the clear value in the skilled, motivated apprentices Blulever nurtures. At the Bezos Earth Fund, we know how vital it is to empower future leaders across industries. Today, in Rusizi District under the #KiRuCaRe project, ARCOS Network together with the District launched the tree planting campaign ! Supported by the Bezos Earth Fund , this initiative will restore critical ecosystems in the Lake Kivu & Rusizi River Basin. Community-based organizations and partners from 5 cities gathered to learn, share, and plan for greener more equitable futures. At COP16, countries established a permanent subsidiary body and agreed on a new program of work under Article 8(j) that cements the role of Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) in shaping biodiversity policy. For generations, IPLCs have protected nature – now their knowledge will directly guide global conservation efforts. The Bezos Earth Fund celebrates this decision and is committed to supporting IPLC-led initiatives, because lasting conservation requires their knowledge, leadership, and participation.
